Bogacki Looks to Ride Momentum through Bowling Green & Indy
Carterville, IL: Reigning NHRA Super Comp champion Luke Bogacki is enjoying what may be the best season in his decorated career. While Bogacki has not been able to duplicate his 2013 success behind the wheel of his K&N Filters backed Super Comp entry, he has been an absolute terror in the Super Gas category. Thus far, Bogacki has driven his RacingRV’s backed, Charlie Stewart Race Cars built Corvette to six NHRA Super Gas final round appearances in 2014, winning five of them. With his most recent win at the Division 3 Lucas Oil Series event at Gateway Motorsports Park (Madison, IL), he’s already posted a massive 711 point total which gives him a comfortable lead in the Super Gas points chase.
Bogacki’s numbers for the season are absolutely incredible. With the Gateway victory, he became just the seventeenth driver in NHRA history to eclipse the 700 point mark (to date, none have failed to win their respective championship). Through 50 competition rounds in his Super Gas season, he has compiled an unworldly 46-4 record. With five events remaining on his 2014 points earning ledger, Bogacki still has opportunities to improve his score. He’s just 18 tallies from eclipsing John Vineyard’s total of 728 points to post the highest score in Super Gas history. Vineyard’s record has stood since his championship season in 1996. Even the mark for the highest sportsman score ever is in jeopardy assuming Bogacki can maintain his torrid pace. That title is currently held by Peter Biondo, who posted 792 points in route to his 2005 Super Stock crown.
“It’s been an incredible run,” admitted Bogacki. “If at season’s end we could reset one or both of those records it would certainly be a huge accomplishment, but that’s not a point of emphasis right now. I understand that no one has ever lost the title with 700+ points, but I’m still concerned that a lot of people are crowning me prematurely. I’ve got a great score, but there are still a handful of really talented drivers who could exceed it. We’ve got several races to run and I’m going to come into each round with the same aggressive mindset that I’ve had all season. That’s my focus right now; just win races and the points will fall into place.”
