Those factory air boxes are as much about sound deadening as air flow.
They can be gutted and cleaned up but the outlet is gonna still be the same size.

...And the inlet? If there's no air movement behind the headlight, as in many GM cars and trucks, then you might be better off with warmer under hood air, as opposed to a restriction up front.
