JEGS Sportsnationals Winners

The Jegs Sportsnationals in Bowling Green Kentucky is a sportsman only race. This national is a favorite among the purist of the sportsman ranks. To win this race is just as big if not bigger than most any race on Mellow Yellow NHRA tour. Qualifying started on Friday, and the weather was perfect.  2 shots for everyone except for the Top classes and Comp, they got one.  The traditional Jegs cookout and the Jegs family night cap of a day of racing.

Saturday begins with time trails for the Super classes, followed by Class Eliminations for Stock and Super Stock. Although it was a cloudy day, racing for the day when off with out a hitch. Tight racing for class eliminations were the norm. With over 200 Stock and Super Stock cars competing this weekend it made for an Indy like class day of racing.  The Super classes and the Top classes had a strong showing with more than 225 cars competing and topping it off with over 20 Comp cars. With 450 plus cars at the Sportnationals, racing seems to be alive and well. Considering that the Div 1 race in Reading Pa. had over 500 cars on the same weekend, I’d say drag racing is looking strong in the sportsman ranks today.

Comp:

Jason Coan and Terry Smith battle it out in the Comp final. Jason gets the easy win when Terry red lights. Jason came from the number 14 spot to get his 5 NHRA national event win.

Super Stock:

Michael Bryant  takes on Cody Lane in the 7 round for the Super Stock title. Michael goes dead on with an 8 to Cody’s 15 thou over. Both drivers had similar lights, .049 for Micheal and .047 for Cody. Michael gets the win with an oh so tight .oo5 margin of victory.

Stock:

Ricky Pennington vs Jeff Adkindon, Ricky has a great .o12 light, but Jeff and better .004 light. Ricky does the better job of driving on the double break out and lets Jeff take the strip. Ricky breaks out by less than Jeff, .014 for Ricky and .032 for Jeff. Ricky gets his first NHRA national event win.

Super Comp:

Jonathan Anderson is in his first NHRA national even final against Austin William. Jonathan has a .004 light to Austin’s .017.  Both drivers are over the index, but Jonathan light gives him the advantage and takes his first NHRA national event win.

Super Gas:

Joe Harper and Steve Hoyt are both dead on in this Super Gas final. Joe’s light is a little late as is Steve’s, so its a drivers race at the stripe. With a .004 difference in lights and .005 difference in et’s, the oh so close margin of .001 goes to Joe Harper for the win.

Super Street:

Gary Horstmann  and Jeremy Schell battle in out in the Super Street Final. Gary and Jeremy are both on a double break out run. Jeremy has the light but take to much stripe. They say on a double break out you want to be a little later on the tree than your opponent. Gary follows the rule when not getting to the stripe and lets Jeremy go, giving Gary his first NHRA national event win.

Top Sportsman:

Jason Lynch and Mark McDonald makes this final a .003 finish line stripe. Jason has .031 light and dead on his dial in with a .006. Mark has the better light, .018, but he is .022 over his dial. The .003 victory goes to Jason taking the stripe but less than a foot.

Top Dragster:

Lynn Ellison and Michael Kile finish off the weekend of racing. Lynn .036 light and .30 over his dial was all he needed to take out Michael’s .050 and .21 over his dial. Lynn picks up the NHRA  Wally for another national event win.
