Talking Re: John Clegg... Please Do The Right Thing!

Why is it John Clegg who has to "do the right thing"? Art staged his car and made the run. It's over.

The check your dial rule is in place simply because mistakes do happen. It's not a conspiracy against Art.

I agree it's happened to me before you simply open your door get the starters attention and point to the dial and they fix it happens all the time not a big deal.

Joe, you don't have the facts of the situation. The run happened after 11PM and they starting line crew had taken the dial in boxes down. There was a low lying fog that made it almost impossible to even see the finish line scoreboards. According to the NHRA rule book the tower is responsible for the input of a competitors class index, if the competitor dials under he is responsible for making sure the dial in is clearly visible for the tower.

Both competitors assumed the tower was doing their job, they were wrong, the NHRA officials agreed based on written rules and there was a rerun. Art red lighted and the rest is history. Those are the facts. You apparently need to read YOUR rule book before giving advice sir. NHRA made the right decision. Jim

Once again, you are not familiar with the NHRA rule book and you were not there. You are wrong and NHRA made a mistake and corrected it. End of story! Jim

Jim, I think Bigshow's point is its not John Clegg's place to do anything but be cordial and understanding about the situation.
It is NHRA and the Tracks responsibility to to remedy the situation not John.
I do not know either of the people involved but mistakes are made and a mutual remedy can be made if everyone keeps their heads straight.
My question is if the fog was bad enough to keep the scoreboards from being seen why were there any cars even on the track.
I would have been more upset about running into a fog with a wet track than anything else.

NHRA touts safety but if you have been around long enough you have witnessed the same issue before. I ran at 8 AM in Indy a few years ago and the scoreboards were not visible from the starting line. I did not make a full pass as I was not comfortable running into a fog and not knowing what was in front of me. I lost and that was the end of the story except I have not been back to Indy since.
NHRA preaches Safety but do not always practice what they preach.
My 2 Cents

Why in the world would the starting line crew take the dial in boxes down??
John Clegg is much braver than I, running 170 mph into the fog!

Rick, you are absolutely correct on all counts! My point was I was asking John to be acceptable to the situation and agree to the rerun as it was, given all the actual facts, it was the only right thing to do. I have no problem with John. In fact I don't believe I have ever met the gentleman. but I do respect the fact that he agreed to the rerun without making it a big deal. Jim

I'm sure he is Ed, and as I stated I respect him for handling the situation the way he did. Sorry if I came off harshly to you Ed but I got way too involved in this deal and spent many hours investigating and making phone calls. I hate to see anyone screwed like that, especially a friend. Sorry

They stated to Art that they took the boxes down "because it was late and they were in a hurry to get out of there". A sorry excuse if you ask me. Did anybody ask me? Oh, ok, well you got my opinion anyway! Jim
