Humans did not evolve from chimpanzees or any of the other great apes that live today. Instead they share a common ancestor that lived roughly 10 million years ago. Walking on two feet may have helped them to run for longer distances to get away from predators. It also may have helped them to find food from further away and have free hands to carry it back home. Whatever the reason, those that could walk on two feet were surviving more often. Lucy, the upright ape that was discovered in 1974. She first appeared 3 million years, she stood upright and had a larger brain. Lucy was in the third of five stages of human evolution.
