Those factory air boxes are as much about sound deadening as air flow.
They can be gutted and cleaned up but the outlet is gonna still be the same size.

...And the inlet? If there's no air movement behind the headlight, as in many GM cars and trucks, then you might be better off with warmer under hood air, as opposed to a restriction up front.

Building this one from scratch, but using the block, heads, intake and crank.

Mark, the inlet to the box is in the fenderwell, not facing forward. As far as restriction goes I can easily do a back to back comparison once up and running.

No, I realize this . I had a 91 at one time.
I was asking mainly because of a Chevy I have here .
You left the door open cuz you have Chevy in your title.
In other words, I wasn't really hijacking your thread.

The only problem I see with the air box is the limited (3"X6") inlet vs a 360 degree surface area of a conical filter at the end of the tube such as Jerry's car. As far as heated air ingestion from the filter location vs the somewhat isolated air box...I suppose in the end it will probably be a wash in terms of performance. There appears to be no hard and fast rule regarding induction plumbing when it comes to these efi cars judging from previous posts.

Evan Smith's car runs hard and he has been running it for a long time. Maybe you could pm him and see what he thinks.

Spent the day tying up loose ends. Added a quick release steering wheel...what a difference it makes easing entry/exit. Fuel lines run and secured. Next is mounting the fuel cell and weight boxes.
