Sounds like a lot of people have a different opinions on what excessive braking means. My opinion and what I used when I was Race Director at Speedworld was.
1) Smoking tires at the finish line 2) Braking enough to cause car to change lanes 3) Braking enough to cause car to get out of control yet staying in your lane Just because a car nose dives does not constitute excessive braking. Lets here other opinions. |

Right or wrong; agree or disagree; hit or miss on this call; like NHRA or don't; like Jerry or don't (can't see how one couldn't)...smashing the brakes at the big end is just straight up dangerous! Ask anyone who has slammed the wall on the top end or anyone that has watched their fellow racer being air lifted out of the track how it feels.

Jerry, his brothers and family are great people, so this is not intended against him. It is just that Jerry was DQ-d.
IMO excessive braking needs to be eliminated somehow. We have all been dumped or dumped someone but the history of drag racing indicates that it is an acceleration contest not a acceleration / braking contest. I for one was racing a soft dialed 155 MPH Modified car with my 131 MPH car. I was in the right lane and watched him brake/smoke twice. I won, he still broke out. Point is...150 mph and locking up brakes can not resemble being safe. I am in favor of racing that takes slamming the brakes out of the equation. Enter 60, qualify 48 and run dial within 5 hun perhaps.

I believe I do remember that. Second race in the first round Kyle spun out and hit the wall against Alden Miller. I was in my car strap in and didn't see it but they reinstated Alden because of it.

Now the big question for NHRA...................
Will it be FIRST, WORST or BOTH D/Q'ed?????????? NHRA put your policy in writing or it's not a policy, it is urban legend.....

I know a lot of racers that spent big money on their brake systems just so that they can play "dump fest"! This is very popular in every Sportsman class. Nothing new. Sounds like they made an example out of him. Lets see how many more this year and of course the starter will end up being the bad guy over his decision of who and when!

The problem here is (as usual with the NHRA) the policy isn't evenly enforced.

Friends constantly ask how a car can cross the centerline after the finish line and that isn't a foul, they wonder how that ever got allowed. Anyone know? They understand eventually you'll have to cross to exit, just not 5' past the finish. |
