Use the top one and leave the bottom one off. I like the slot leading the gear contact slightly. Gear gets a little oil.

I have always used a slot filed in the bottom, aimed at the dist. gear. and have wondered about using the top O ring and no bottom. once again Adger the experienced one, confirms. thanks guys.
