Mark,
As I stated, there were half pound breaks at least through the '76 year. Bob R. is probably right about '78 being the year. It was then that they consolidated 6 classes into 3 by going to one pound breaks, and that moved everyones class letter designation up some. I remember it happening as my Wagon was an "R" and then became and "N", but wasn't sure of the year. Jerry |

I know I ran R @16 lbs in 73-74 with a full size Chevy. If you take the heaviest 65 Chevelle wagon (3351) and bring the hp down to 210, it's still 15.9... So they must have been 15 lb cars in the late 70's . That's only a move down of one letter (to R) So there had to be only one class removed at first the way I see it. I'm sure Travis could look it up for us when he gets home.

My brothers (Paul and Phil Berg) were competing in the class at the time and went to the Suffolk points race in (I believe) April of 1974. When they arrived, Buster told them that Davis and Skaggs ("Junkyard Dog" Chevelle wagon) blasted the record into the 12.20's at Indy the weekend before (remember the days before the internet). To make a long story short, Paul knocked the SS/Q record down to 12.16 that weekend! In a bizzare twist, some months later, NHRA eliminated "Q" with the silly explanation that it looked too much like an "O". Of course the record for R (the "new" class for the wagons) was set at a minimum at the same time...hmmmmm...Anybody that has NHRA records in that time frame will find that the Berg Bros. Precision Automotive '65 Chevelle wagon was the last record holder in SS/Q. Mark Berg I/S 2665 |

Mark Y,
My '65 300 Deluxe Wagon at the original 283/220 classification weighed 3318 lbs., which was la natural 15.00 lb. weight break car. As Mark B. explained, they did away with Q, and it became an R car and that's how it's listed in the 1976 rulebook "Classes R ---- 15.00 to 15.99". At it's natural HP and weight, it was always in the 15.00 weight break class until they started factoring engines. Even at 235 HP the 300 Deluxe is still 14.11 at natural weight and can still run N at 3695 lbs., which we did for years. Now at 227 HP it would only have to weigh 3575, only 105 lbs over it's original weight. Why "Q" and "O" were confusing in SS but not in Stock is beyond me, but thanks for reminding me Mark. Jerry |

Somebody must have blew it one time at a Nat'l , so that was the solution. It had to be early 75 at least before they changed that.

When they moved SS/Q to R what happened to cars like Jimmy Parker's 66 Chevy 4 door running R with the 283 220hp? Maybe we could wake up Parker to fill us in....Sorry, know this is about station wagons, but would like to know....

Gents,
When Stock was consolidated with Superstock in '72 the 16 lb class was SS/R and then, as Jerry stated, in about '75 or '76 Q was dropped and the 15lb class became SS/R. I have a picture of one of my 16lb Impalas at Warner Robbins in about '76 with SS/T on the window. In '71 I ran a Belair two door in the 15lb class which was O/S at the time, it figured 15.60 which was way heavy for the class but it ran pretty good. I actually set the O/S record at Gainesville that year and tore down but later found out that Bruce Wilkerson set it the same day in Bowling Green with a '56 Wagon @ 225hp and he was quicker by about four hundreths or so.
