If there is no difference why do people put them on instead of a stock hood? Because it looks cool? Being able to seal the carb to the hood is worth something, at least is was on my Firebird, and those scoops are in the wrong spot compared to a cowl hood on a Chevrolet. It doesnt cost a 1000.00 dollars to put a hood on one of those cars. You can by a brand new replacement for GM for under 300.00. Maybe this will go away, or people will have extra hoods for that new 300 Hp 350 or a big block project.

A friend who has years of experience with this combination put his flat hood back on a couple years ago. He said there was no additional performance to be found in the air hood. I believe he also said the flat hood is 18 pounds lighter.

I have a 69 camaro flat hood I would sell if someone needs one. I can bring it to Indy points meet. It is primer, I took it off my 69 and put a cowl on it. The car is going to be a street car, so I did it for looks. It is a original GM 69 flat hood.

I guess I got lucky. My cars were in Cali for the winter, and although both of the cowl hoods had already been painted PEAK blue, it wasn't that big of a deal to get another one. Bernie C found several of them on the local Cali Craigslist for around $100. Rochester, NY Craigslist, not so much, lol.
I also had a flat one at home, but it wasn't worth the shipping cost. It was far better to trade it to a local SS/JA friend for a good 4 bolt block that's now in the wagon, lol. |
