Smile Re: Sick and Tired of POS Chinese Chargers

You need a charger that is set up for continuous 40 amps. the Schumacher chargers that are inexpensive won't charge continuously at 40 or 50 amps. ( the cheap ones only charge at 40 - 50 amps about 5 minutes before kickin out) I have 2 optima batteries and I use a black and decker charger that is set up to charge continuously at 40 amps and reducing as needed. The Optima battery guy told me to charge them hard. Optima has their own chargers available now and they hit the batteries pretty hard. He said don't trickle charge them give um some juice. I hope this helps. Dave.

Weird. That's exactly opposite of what I've been told. Their high buck charger only charges at 12 amps.

I believe the charge rate is voltage and temperature sensitive!

YELLOWTOP® Type: D51 & D51R - D35DS46B24R - D75/25 - D34D34/78 - D27F
These batteries are dual-purpose. They are designed for engine start and cyclic applications and for use in vehicles with large accessory loads.
Recommended charging information:

Alternator:
  • 13.65 to 15.0 volts, no amperage limit.
Battery Charger:
  • 13.8 to 15.0 volts, 10 amps maximum, approximately for 6-12 hours.
Cyclic Applications:
  • 14.7 volts, no current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). When current falls below 1 amp, finish with 2 amp constant current for 1 hour.
Rapid Recharge:
  • Maximum voltage 15.6 volts (regulated), no current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). Charge until current drops below 1 amp.

I have an old Montgomery Ward 12 volt battery charger that was given to me used in the early 80's and it still going strong. Gauge and charge light still work.

As far as the Chinese Made chargers, it is not the Chinese fault that the chargers made there are junk, it is the importing company in the United States fault for the poor quality. They are the ones who spec. out the parts and materials they use in the charger. The more cheap crap they can put in the charger, the cheaper they can sell it, and the more money they make because of the volumes they sell due to low cost.

Believe it or not I have seen some quality stuff come out of China but, it costs as much as something made in the USA. You get what you pay for!!

Great info gents. And thank you Alan, those Rizk are exactly what I was looking for. I just ordered the p160. Looks to be a very nice piece, and made old school solid. I may also buy one of their smaller ones as well for aroung the shop.
