I have a Budd Rowe built Stocker engine been sitting around a while wrapped up. Has Pink Rods, Forged Pistons, 2 Bolt mains. Building a 1969 Impala for Stock. Another racer suggested since it needs modern upgrades consider building a Super Stock engine. Add a SS type cam, better valve train and Intake. Does not have to be a world be a world beater but a reliable runner. Stocker to SS. Is it just a cam and intake change? In Stock Solid Lifters and Roller Rockers are allowed. Replacing with Roller Lifters and Cam should be straight forward. Correct? D |

Daniel, many of us have a lot of money in our heads & Intake manifolds. Super Stock rules are much different there. It won't be very fast with Stocker heads & Intake.

Sounds like SS/LA? If so, not an easy index in my opinion.
Tough to do with "stock" heads. I attempted a set of "budget"/non welded 441 heads once. I still needed long valves and shaft rockers. What rocker ratio is your cam designed for? Shaft rockers might be your only option. I like your idea. If you have a bunch of upgrades to do for Stock, explore your options with a few more upgrades. You're never going to set the world on fire, but you need to run the index and avoid heads-up runs. Can you do that? |

Been an NHRA member since 1970. In SS car can fall in L, M or N. Know it can be a K/SA maybe a J/SA Figured Shaft Roller for stability. Would confer with John at Bullet Cam what would be best parts. Just did not want to carve up a set of 441 heads. They are not as available as in the past. Hoping well prepared Stocker heads would be compatible enough. Can a 2 bolt main block prepared for stock live in a Super Stock Engine. Or do you need an aftermarket block and just start over.. D |

The Stocker pistons will not have valve notches that would work with a SS type roller cam. Not even close.

Yes, a Super Stock profile can be ground on a stock journal cam core.
No, you will not have nearly enough piston to valve clearance with Stock Eliminator pistons and a competitive, even marginally competitive Super Stock cam. No, legal Stock Eliminator cylinder heads will not be competitive in Super Stock, and no, they will not likely work with the appropriate valve train for a Super Stock camshaft without major modifications. And no, the short block you describe will not withstand running it like it is a competitive Super Stock engine. Do yourself a favor, and build a good legal Stock Eliminator engine. Consider a combination that isn't utterly flogged to death.

Dan, why don't you just do a 350/250/230 and call it a day. You can use all of your 255 stuff and it fits into O/P/Q so not a lot of heads-up stuff. All you'll need is an intake and the right carb.
