If I were you I would just go bracket race that combo and have fun with it. Do all the suspension mods etc and then drop the 302 in it. Spending the money on a header that may or may not work well is just a waste of money.

I have always liked messing with sixes, and oddballs at that.
You're facing the same issues I am. I have a car/engine combo I want to run (67 El Camino/230), but the advice here is that it's not competitive. Do I build what I have and want to build, or do I buy a car that has a better chance of winning?

You can win with any car, just talk to Lane Weber or a host of other guys here like Mark Y. The problem is you may spend more money than necessary jsu to get this combo run the number

Just make sure this combo has the potential to at least run the index if you are going class racing. Other wise it's just a waste of time and money.

This engine combo can run the index in a Maverick or Comet, I get a slightly better flowing head and a little less weight, so I figure if I'm in the ballpark I *should* at least run the index. I personally think it'd be fun as hell to put a 200 with a 1bbl in the 15's. I like the oddballs. At this point, I have everything but a converter and cam, and by scrounging (thank you CL and ebay) and using some used parts I am in it $1500. Granted that is just collecting parts and I have yet to tear into the motor and trans. I found a header unused for $150. I'll probably start a build blog to share, good or bad.

When someone says why, ask, why not?

If it doesn't run the number, I can put that 200 in another Fairmont with some more cam and carb on the street and then I'll go 302, but not until after I give the six a fair shot.

Cool Re: Inline six/fox body header?

My car is not that competitive. I am a 1 of 1 combination. Im usually .3 back of the chebbie guys and V6 other chebbie and pontiac guys. I have a blast, do ok, and did better than was expected first time around when the car was built. Go for it. I seem to recall a rather good running straight 6 in a Comet........... with a stick........
