"why would I put a 6.00 gear behind my bb/turbo400 combo? That said, we've got that gear behind a 305 stocker and count it amongst those that ain't clicking it off at the stripe!" I don't know of any LEGAL 305 powered stockers that use a Ford 9" |

My reference to "install a 6.00 gear in it..." was (and I'm assuming) is that this bracket car with a monster sized engine (relative to S/SS engines) has the luxury of having a mid 4 rear gear, probably 4.56. Like I said, that's a wild azzed guess. Keeping the car in gear until your back in the pits with such a gear is one thing, putting a gear that makes your legal S/SS go as fast as possible and then coasting down after the finish line MIGHT put a new perspective on things.
And prior to class rules allowance of aftermarket rods, a smart racer did everything possible to keep the big end of the rod round, not elliptical. Now of course top quality rods are allowable and it isn't as much of an issue. When I ran Stock, my front pump / rear sump AMC, I'd be willing to bet there wan't a half-dozen Stockers with as much science in the oil pan as mine and eventually an almost completely reconfigured oiling system in the block itself. The engine consisted of a liberal amount of coatings and frictional loss measurements. Still, when hitting the brakes at upwards of 125 MPH, pressure dropped to zero and attempts to feather the pressure back up with braking and throttle were futile. So to keep the engine together longer, it was best to just click it off. So when a bracket racer and S/SS groupie comes on here with statements such as offered by 1320, my response is no, he doesn't know about all engines and the problems that are adherent to the manufacture of the original OEM product. The simple way to prove me wrong is to build an AMC (not a generic chevrolet) that is legal & runs 10.50's @ 125 and "show me " how it is done by an expert. If you can pull that off without an accusump, I'll pay attention. Super Stock, on the other hand, is much more forgiving with the allowance of aftermarket oil pans and in some cases, external pick-ups (like a Hemi).

In that case I'd refer to the second part of my response..... "have one made....." if you really need it.

I'm only asking because I was under the impression that manufacturing a ring/pinion would take very special equipment like CAD design, milling, turning, hobbing, heat treat, etc. As well, I did not know there was a company that would build just one set. If you search the forum, you will find the thread on the 5.00 gears that were custom made by Richmond. Besides the time and effort involved by the people who organized the production, I think they had to have 49 sets made. It would be nice to know the name of a company that would side step all these obstacles and produce a one off gearset. Thanks in advance for the name and number. |

I had a lot of custom parts made for my cars back in the late 1980's including the first prototype "all roller bearing" 4 speed made by G&G transmissions that I ran in SS/A & B. George also made a couple of custom ratios for me that I used in that transmission when I ran it in SS/AM. I believe I was the first drag racer to run a carbon fiber driveshaft. That was in '89 or '90. I located a guy in Michigan who was making them for the Porsche teams and Roger Penske. When I moved to comp, Craig Liberty made an ultra low gearset for my clutchless 5 speed that I ran in C/SM and H/A. David Nickens built a couple sets of split dominators that we ran in B/A and C/A. I know that Glidden ran that combination for a while before they were banned in Pro Stock. Ball bearing carriers in a 9" Ford center section was another one. (Not pinion support, but the bearings on the spool.) I know that some if not most of these items are available "off of the shelf" now but back then you had to make em yourself or have them made. A number of the Pro Stock guys back then had custom ring and pinion sets. I believe they were made by Richmond Gear. I'd check with G&G or Craig Liberty if I needed one today. Going fast in this game is a 24/7 job and it's expensive. If you are not working on the car, you are building new parts and/or renting the race track to test them. We used to rent IRP for $1,500.00 per day to test new combinations. We were the only car there.

Well one thing for dam sure is there aren't any good running 305 stockers out there with a 6.00 gear in them, custom gear or not!! the only way that gear would have a chance of working would be in the 1/8 mile or like somebody said at Denver on a hot summer day.

Strange makes a 6.00 12 bolt pro gear. Have used them on occasions.
http://www.strangeengineering.net/catalog/index.html part# RP01988600 BTW Raced for almost 18 years and have always shifted to neutral (PG, turbos, Pro Trans, and Torque Flites) and shut the motor off at the strip. |

That applies to most, other than a certain NJ bracket Racer's buddies.
