Gary, Before you get to many answers that could steer you in the wrong direction I would get on the Cal DMV web site it actually has some pretty good information about registering a out of state vehicle in CA, here is a link
Also make sure you get a Permanent Trailer Registration tags for the trailer it will save you some money.

I wish I could offer some advice Gary, but I am registered out of state thanks to being active duty military. No way would mine pass smog either!!!

Thanks Bob. Actually that was the first place I checked, but you know how government websites can be...the left never knows what's going on at the right. From what I read, an out of state vehicle must have been registered at least 5 months from the state it's coming from to qualify for any exemptions. My truck is bone stock, no programmers or aftermarket parts.
