Tow Vehicles Registered In California
What are registration requirements in California for diesel trucks & enclosed race trailers these days? I read something where an out of state vehicle is exempt from the stricter emission regulations instituted there. Also, how about insurance on trailers...is it covered by the tow vehicle (like Florida)?

Re: Tow Vehicles Registered In California
Gary,
I have a 2004 Ford F350 diesel truck, no smog test (yet), but the license tags are steep, this year it was about $480 for my tags, down from over $500 the year before. My car trailer insurance is added on to my truck insurance policy, but I have Farmers, others may be different. |

Thanks Phil. Yeah, I've heard stories about tag fees, and ready to be bent over. But was concerned about emissions. I have an '04 F350 too and heard rumors about Cal putting the screws to diesel vehicles in the next year or so.

Re: Tow Vehicles Registered In California
Well..........I had to have my 2004 Dodge Cummins smoged earlier this year. It passed.....however they press the go pedal three times hard. If they see smoke.....you may not pass. Mine has the Edge programmer on it. I was told if it did not throw any codes and no smoke I did not have to remove it.....and I didn't. However I have heard from other smog techs that you MUST remove the aftermarket programmers. At the date of the smog check mine was set to OEM parameters.
Since you are bringing it into California you will need to have it weighed and provide a certified weigh ticket.....and now maybe pass smog before you can get it registered. My racing partner just received his renewell and has to pass smog. |
