I highly recommend the Valvoline VV-850 10W-30 Racing Oil also. I found it to help in the rocker arm "ball" area too,on my Chebbie. Acts almost like a synthetic when it is warm, in that you will not lose oil pressure like most regular oils. Like in the previous post, get it from NAPA and save yourself alot of money over the Mail order places.

I for got to mention that Comp Cams sell a zinc additive for break in , can be used with any oil. a good alt. product.

Bradd Penn is the old Kendal green oil.It is recommended for flat tappets,lots of zinc.I believe it is the old SJ designation.Great oil reasonably priced.

On my hot rod for the street I have been using Shell Rotella 15-40W and not have had any cam related problems but, I have had this case of oil around for a while. I was told that the the Feds were after the diesel oil manufacturers to lessen the amount of zinc in their diesel motor oils. Does anyone know if this has happened yet?

By the way we use Royal Purple in the race car.

Is anyone using Lucas Oil Products - "Engine Break-In Oil Additive" w/TB Zinc-Plus. How do you like it? Plan to use it in next oil change. Lucas says key benefits are:

Excellent for flat tappet camshafts during break-in or as an additive to any motor oil to prevent premature wear.
Exclusive blend of extreme pressure additives.
Add one bottle with every oil change to increase the zinc content of your motor oil.
Designed for race applications requiring additional extreme pressure additives.

The new diesel oil, spec SJ, came out along with the Jan 2007 introduction of particulate traps for diesel pickups. You want to find the older spec oil, CI4+, that does not meet SJ. the oil companies get away with saying the new stuff is backwards compatible and meets CI4+ spec, but the new stuff has different additives and a major reduction in what we want to protect flat tappets. Most retailers don't have the old stuff anymore, but Chevron distributors may carry the old stuff in 5 gallon buckets.

Thanks for the info Bob P. Does anyone know if the petroleum based racing oils have as much zinc in them as the oils from the pre-government intervention days or do they contain reduced amouts of zinc?

Received information on ZN content from Lucas Oil Products on their - "Engine Break-In Oil Additive" w/TB Zinc-Plus, as an additive to current conventional oil for drag racing.

o The typical amount of zinc phosphorous in the older oils is somewhere around 1400-1500 ppms:

o If you run a 5 qt system, if you add 1/2 a bottle of the TB Zinc to the 5
qts, it will give you 5,000 to 5,200 ppms of the zinc: and

o Does it hurt to run a full bottle? No, but it is a waste of the product. A half bottle is plenty enough for your 5 quart application.

Questions were for a Stock Eliminator engine running between 5500 and 6500 rpm.
