I raced in NHRA's Division 6 years ago, but upon retirement, my wife and I have purchased a small ranch outside of Waco Texas, which appears to put me in Division 4.
My Google-foo has thus far revealed that Little River is near us, but it's an IHRA track and appears to be eighth-mile, and it looks a lot...less than some of the west coast strips that I've raced at, to put it as politely as I can. Are IHRA Stock rules the same as NHRA? What about NMCA? Are there any other sanctioning organizations operating in this area? I'm considering putting together a fairly basic I/J/K Automatic 2015 Ecoboost Mustang. Just trying to run under, not trying to set any records. I see that there is an NHRA divisional race in Ennis at the Texas Motorplex. And some events in Houston if I want to travel that far. Anything else going on around here? I'd hate to take the time and effort to put a class car together and then only be able to bracket race it at crappy little eighth-mile strips. Last edited by 6130; 12-29-2020 at 12:38 PM. |

I check local dragstrips during a move like most would check for schools. Stock is dead in IHRA.

IHRA dropped class racing several years ago. Only bracket racing in IHRA now.

So maybe I can do testing to develop the car during bracket programs wherever, and then maybe run a few NHRA divisionals a year...

Welcome to Texas, Mr 6130....
Your right Texas is kind of spread out as are the Tracks. But depending on how big a ranch you have, it looks like there are one or two places to race your Stocker that are close. Texas Motorplex 2 Div races/1 Nat'l * 70 miles Houston Raceway Park 1 Div Race 1 Nat'l * 200 miles Alamo City Motorplex * 170 miles Noble Raceway * 1 Div race 250 miles Tulsa raceway * 1 Div Race 350 miles Little River Raceway ( I never had a traction issue there) 45 miles Xtreme race way park 70 miles Denton drag strip 185 miles * NHRA sanctioned Like I said Texas is spread out, but you are pretty close to a lot of Great tracks. See you soon and again welcome to Texas.....just check you leanings at the Border... RJ Last edited by RJ Sledge; 12-29-2020 at 02:44 PM. |

Build a NSS car.
There is a good group that races at quite a few Texas tracks. TDRA has a Nostalgia SS class. https://tdraracing.com/nostalgia-super-stock-rules/ Better get rid of the "Crappy 1/8 mile tracks" idea if you want to race. There are several reasons the tracks are getting shorter. 1. insurance cost to the track owner. We used to race Modified and Gas meets back in the 70's at Temple. It was a very nice place at that time with all the pecan trees shading the place. I was there in 2018 and it just isn't the same place since the trees are almost gone & the track is 50 years older. About the only "Class racing" going on is at NHRA Div. 4 races where you can run the car you intend to build. There is some interest in a Stock/Super Stock association, but it isn't moving forward very fast. Welcome to Div 4. LOL, I see my old friend RJ has a better reaction time than I do, Today Only! RJ, I think they closed Denton, but are opening Red Line (@ Caddo Mills) back up.

I lived in Waco for many years. We thought it was pretty centrally located for running D4 divisional races. Within 4 hours you can do 2 divisional & 1 National at Ennis, 1 Div & 1 Nat in Baytown, a Div in Noble, Ok, At 8 hours you can add a Div in Belle Rose, La, and Tulsa. Rumor is Tulsa is also being considered for a National event. At 9 hours you can pick up a double div and a Nat in Topeka. PM if you want to talk about it.

RJ, no need to check my leanings at the border. My family on my father's side has been here for many many generations- my family name is all over Texas. I was not fortunate enough to have been born here, but I have always wanted to be a Texan, and it has been a life goal for my wife and I to become Texans, for the entire 20 years we have been together. We are extremely thankful to be here, and our value system and beliefs are a MUCH better fit here than anywhere else we've lived.

Welcome and hope your Stocker build goes well, the Combo has been discussed on this Forum and it will run well against the index with just basic mods and tuning.
If I can be any help just ask. Take care RJ |

Conyo'!! LOL! 8 good tracks within 350 miles is pretty good to me! Don't move to South Florida! LMAO!!
Good Luck from another "newbie". Been racing forever in everything from T/D T/S to super street, gas, comp, Outlaw 10.5 and heavy street. We built an IHRA stocker/footbrake car for my son several years ago but I just bought my first N legal car and I'm having a blast so far! |
