Red face I lost a friend:

Last night a good friend of mine Harmie Smith passed away.He was a long time drag racer who started out class racing back in the 60's and never got away from it.Older guys in div.4 may have remembered him from a Modified pinto compact he ran in the 70's to his w/s pinto wagon and w/sa mustang 2 he ran in the 80's and 90's. Recently he and I have been running a 82 Monte-Carlo in U/sa.He developed COPD in recent years and hadn't been able to drive so I've been running it off and on for the last few years.Harmie never gave up his love of drag racing and he often said that his car was what kept him going these last few years. I'll really miss him coming over and us spending hours talking about his car and ways to make it quicker.Godspeed my friend I won't forget you. Bill

Harmie Smith was a great guy that loved racing.
I first met him at the old Hallsville track.
He worked for me off and on at my Whitehouse and later at the I-20 track.
When I built the Prescott Ar. track he worked there and helped us a lot.
He had a lot of racing history he could talk about.
It wasn't all Drag racing either.
He had some stories about the Rose Bowl in Tyler, Tx.
He loved his cars.
Prayers for the family and his friends. He will be missed.

I remember coming home from a job with the idea in my head of looking for a different job one day in about 1985 or 86. My job had gotten unbearable. Everyone there except the boss was 17 to early 20's and into drugs including the boss and his idea of decipling workers was a group meeting where he stood up in front of all and cussed, ranted, and raved. When I walked in the door at home, Bill answered the phone and then said "it's for you". It was Harmie on the other end. He called to offer me a job. He had actually called earlier and gotten permission from Bill to offer me a job. I didn't even have to think about it. I went in and gave notice and was told I could leave at the end of the week if I wanted to. GOD most decidedly works in mysterious ways. He has been a great friend ever since and will be greatly missed.

I go back a little further than many of you....I remember Harmie when he worked at the "Big 4 Tire" store in S'port. It was on Greenwood Road across from the Fairgrounds grandstand....he had a 64-65 Mercury Murader that he ran a few times at I-20....it was a tank....if I remember correctly it would barely get in the 16s....but he was living his dream. He later drove the 69-70 Boss 302 Mustang that Jack Gladden owned. I grew up across the street from the Gladden family and Jack is responsible for my brother and I getting into drag racing....our first race to attend was Twin Lanes in Hallsville around 1962....it's ironic that my brother asked about Harmie a few months ago.
