Numidia Dragway – Numidia, Pa – Bob Phillips & George Smith claimed victory at Race # 5 & 6 of the Mid Atlantic Super Gas Association event held at Numidia Dragway in Numidia, Pa.
On Saturday, Phillips from Oley, Pa qualified his 2003 Dodge Neon at the bottom half of the field with a 10.11 but, that would not defer him from marching through the field and claiming victory. Phillips started the day off with 9.938 to 9.886 victory over George Smith then took a bye-run after Gary Laird was not able to make the call for 2nd round. Phillips then got another break as he received a bye-run in the 3rd round due to the way the ladder fell into place. Phillips Semi-Final round opponent would be Maple Grove LODRS Runner-Up Lance Kreiger and his 2004 Corvette. Running under cool, night skies Phillips strapped a .004 light on Lance and ran it out to a 9.931 to Lance’s losing 9.913. On the other side of the ladder was West Virginia’s own Jay Cepelka and his 1986 Dodge Omni. Cepelka who was the most recent runner-up at Maple Grove back in May started off his day with a victory over Don Christman, Earl Nichols Jr. and in the 3rd round with a bye-run to the finals on the line Jay defeated a red-lighting Paul Schonberger. With dew rolling in late at night the finals were pushed to Sunday morning following the 2nd qualifying shot. In a battle for the Mopar fans out there Phillips found himself 2nd off the line to Cepelka in the finals but, Phillips had the Neon on a rail as he ran an almost perfect 9.906 to Cepelka’s break-out 9.883. On Sunday, George Smith from Centereach, NY ended a long drought of over 2 years with a victory in race # 6. Smith was definitely the “lucky dog” that day as all 4 of his victories came via red-lights by all his opponents. Smith started his day with a victory over Kreiger & Bob Silfies to match-up in the semis with Phillips. With revenge on his mind Smith received red-light #3 as Bob went -.020 as Smith ran it out to a 9.879 for the victory and a trip to the finals. On the other side of the ladder was fan favorite George Donhauser and his 1979 Arrow. Donhauser took down Lucky Luciano in the 1st round, Mickey Varner in the 2nd round and matched-up with point’s leader Tom Goldman in the semis. At the flash of the green is was dead-even as George took a .015 to .016 advantage over Goldman but, on the other end Donhauser was determined to go to the finals with a 9.906 to 9.921 victory and a match-up with Smith. As the sun was going down on race # 6 both finalist were ready to do battle but, unfortunately the battle didn’t last long as Donhauser would go red by 5 thousandth and hand the victory to Smith who ran it out to a 9.906.
