Stocker photos predating 1973 would be a help. Do you have any info on AHRA races? How about contacts of people who raced the era?
A couple questions that you may be able to help with, the 15 year rule came into effect at the start of the 1972 season it appears as Keith Berg won stock at the Supernationals in 1971 with a '55 Chevrolet. When did the NHRA go to 1960 and newer only rule? Do you know if the AHRA followed suit? Do you know what year the 4 speed hydra transmission was banned in the Chevrolet sedan deliveries? I know it was 1969 or '70 but need a confirmation. How's that for a couple questions. I do have a countless number of leads so it shouldnt be a problem getting a confirmation elsewhere if your not sure. Oh, I am looking to talk to Ford, Pontiac, Olds, Buick Chrysler racers. Lots of Chevy on board so no shortage there. What tracks did you race Tom? Any specifics about the tracks? How exactly did the Bucks or Cups work? I assume it was just an option the driver had, take the points or trophy? e-mail at : fabfore@sympatica.ca or jrstk@hotmail.com Last edited by TOM KASCH; 01-22-2011 at 10:21 AM. |

Keith Berg did NOT win the 71 Supernationals...My old buddy Paul Dilcher did. They were co-owners of the car. Paul was the driver and Keith was wheel polisher....

The email was sent to Tom in hopes he could help out, which he has and Im thankful for but I had no idea he would be posting the email as I had sent it. If I had known the email was going to be posted I would have been more specific. Thanks very much those willing to help out. It was a great time in stock history, one that myself and many feel is worth recording. Doug |

I'd be glad to help any way I can. As you can see, old Jr Stock racers are very adament about themselves and their friends getting their due notoriety in drag racing history. (did I just call Neil Smedley old?) Just make sure you check in here and on the HAMB thread for the real story. You wouldn't want your book to end up like that Davis guy's S/S books...Filled with errors, cover to cover.

Between here, the HAMB and those outside of the WWW, I do have a long list of contacts, a bunch Ive yet to call and a bunch who have helped, and continue to do so. My worst fear is to create the same book that Mr Davis has. I feel it helps that I do have a different personality and have no issue with asking if I don't know or am unsure of something. Thanks for your offer to help Mark, I will touch base. At the moment, Im 3 or 4 phone calls behind, I have another 3 or 4 interviews recorded that I need to write out and Ive got mail from Wayne Jesel, Bill Izykowski and Poole/Elliott to go through.. Im glad these stocker guys are a patient bunch, or should I say have learn't to be. Maybe its that age thing you mentioned. ![]() |

At Etown NJ in the 70's They seperated the bucks and the cups categories. They had class eliminations for both. Then you ran for the eliminator (still seperated).
One thing was track champions in the cups division. Could not compete in the cups division the next year they had to go to bucks. I remember that because Louie Lafreda with a Hemi Super bird ran our class but ran cups. He was in the lead for the championship. he did everything he could to get someone else to win. But he won anyway LOL. At the time you could trade your trophy in for 5 dollars (class) and 25 dollars (eliminator). Louie was one of very few cars in cups that ran on the national record (he held it at the time). He got in the track for free NHRA national record holders were allowed in free. Then he would make another $30 for racing. Not bad for a $2600 (New)Lime Green Hemi Superbird.

Doug...I too, commend you on your project.....my reference to keith was meant to bring a smile to the face to all who know him, including keith, i hope.......I agree with what mark yacavone posted....You will have to sift through a littany of bench race bull to come up with an accurate consensus of the truth in most cases. I am pretty sure that is why mr. davis` book is not as factual as it could have been....If I can be any help to you or your project, please do not hesitate to contact me..
