Hey, I have a recommendation to all those drivers leaving first........DON'T REDLIGHT! Then you won't have to worry about being first, last, slow, fast, retarded, or anything else!

Yes, tpoh815, it would be down track that the slow car would "find out"....it would be immediate for the faster car....feel like "crap"?.....well, as I see it, there would be hope for a few moments (if you are the slower car), and then the crappy feeling...I would think that would be better than an instantaneous crappy feeling!

Let's take this one item at a time; to try to answer it any other way is to invite confusion, even chaos, into this otherwise well-ordered and fraught with logical thought, discussion...

1. "Wow I just (thought I) knocked the tree down, only to find out 330 feet later I bulbed ! Am I missing something here??"

Yes. What you are missing is the FACT that, under the current rules, when you bulbed, you LOST THE RACE.
Instantly. Go HOME!
HOWEVER......
With the "dual red-light" system, it is a distinct POSSIBILITY that while you're driving that 330 feet, the second car may have BULBED WORSE THAN YOU!!! YOU WIN this round; do not go home!!!

2. "So, now, the advantge goes where?"
It goes to YOU, because you didn't get eliminated by a (current system) system that deprived the 2nd car to leave of HIS chance to redlight. HE goes home; YOU are still "IN."

3. "Now I feel like crap run over twice"
WHY??? YOU just won the round; a round you would have lost under the current, antiquated-electronics system.

No; you feel like going another round... and you CAN, because YOU WON... even though you bulbed... first!

Is that not something you'd like to see happen??????

Bill,

Bobby quoted my post. Then he made the obvious statement about the worst red light in a heads-up race.

Am I correct to assume that the u/sa that has just left the line 5 second before the aa/s, will not find out he has redlighted till the faster car leaves the line with some sort of a green light? So he will be near the 330 mark when he gets the bad news.
That's how the proposed system would work, yes.

If you think about it, it's really not all that different.... We already have "delayed win lights" when you have somebody blow the tires off, and the other car never lifts and breaks out. That's an extreme example, but so is the U vs A car scenario. Yes, it happens, but the vast majority of handicapped starts aren't that big, and the green or red will probably be displayed by the time you hit 60'. (In most cases, you probably know in your gut whether or not you red-lighted anyways, unless it was double-oh red.)

It's all academic -- again, doesn't matter to me if which system they use.

Why not wait until the race is run and over to reveal if someone went red? If it's being argued that the change is to "enhance the show", then let the cars race it out to the end so the fans have something to see instead two cars that have clicked it off and roll to the end of the track. Oh wait, they run us before the fans have gotten there and after they have been dismissed at the end of the pro show, so I guess that doesn't matter.

When describing the science of drag racing to my friends, I always lead with "there are many more ways to lose than there are to win." I would love to see a "worst" apply to the redlight situation. Yes I drive a slower car, so I like the idea of the playing field leveled a little bit. Lord knows I need all the help I can get!

It's nice to talk about, and I would love it to be implemented, but I really doubt it will change.

( Mike, What would you feel like if you went.498 and won the race?)

Sorry ,asked and answered by Dedman.

Anyway, the way I see this it, if NHRA did some kind of poll about this, the faster cars would probably vote for the status quo.
Seeing there are a lot more 9 &10 second cars nowadays, they would win out. Same reason we have an all qualified field at Indy, and the same reason we don't have deep- staging anymore.

So, NHRA ,if you're monitoring this, just do what's right for the sport ,long term, rather than what's the most popular right now.
