I spoke with Glenn Barnett today. He checked with his dad, and yes, this was the 2nd Barnett wo23 car. It was sold new out of Lenox Dodge to Jim Pevey (not sure on spelling, sorry if wrong). Jim wanted 4 speed car, so he traded Warren. Glenn said that his dad sold the car to Reid, renamed "Holton Dodge". Warren Barnett had no idea that Glen Warfel bought it, renamed it "Scat Pack Dodge". The car was sold again and became "smokin joe".
The car was lettered up exactly as the other Barnett car, only with the "A". If this car could only talk........... |

Glad you were able to put this history together on your car. How are you going to restore it? In my opinion (that's all it is is an opinion) the 67 cars always seem to get restored back to the white paint - to me this is boring. The character of an old race car is in its heritage. Race paint, wheels, ect... make them stand apart from a plain white Coronet - just my 2 cents. Glad to have helped put your cars history together. Any pics of how the car looks today?
Thanks, Mark J 1968 Hemi S/S Registry |

Thanks again for evrything. This is how the car looks now. I have a parts car with nice quarters and body parts. Also have really nice chrome for it. I intend to put it back as a race car. I like the white stock look but love the look and sound of a race car. It also adds character.

Thanks. I think so too. Car has stories to tell. Im trying to figure how to get under the gold paint and see if any of the white car with graphics is still under it.

That was the original plan. Now, with all of the history, I really don't know for sure. It sure is temping to put it back as a Barnett car, Whisnant or the Scat Pack Dodge.
Its kinda ironic, I bought the car thinking that it was only Smokin Joe (a very cool WO23 from Ga). Join a forum, make some calls, now I know the car's pre Smokin Joe history and still have no idea who Smokin Joe, JJ Miles or Artis Harper are. Awesome ride so far! I hear it gets better once the hemi is back in it.... |

Tough call.
Has some great history. The background of it won't ever change but the "Smokin Joe" logo just so fits the time the car came from. It will be cool whatever you do with it. My 2 cents. info link: http://www.oldride.com/library/1967_dodge_coronet.html Last edited by Charlie A; 08-25-2014 at 12:19 PM. |
