I'm sorry to correct you but the Sox and Martin Shop raced with Herb McCandless driving it a 72 Demon. The wheel stand car was a DEMON not a duster. The car is at Piedmont Dragway as I type this for a show and as it has been restored to origional condition. That was the car that won 5 straight US Racing Team Events in 72.

Herb, I got a chance to see your Dad "play" with a old prostock machine back in the 80's. I had gone to Farmington Dragway in North Carolina with my Brother to a IHRA points race. rounds. I had been on the fence watching superstock and modified production practice/qualifying and after they had all ran a bracket class came out.I was talking to someone and watched a few of them. Most of the cars were the usual bracket cars but a duster/ demon type car was turning some serious rpms in the water and was sounding extremely nice. I took special notice and watched the car make a pass and the guy was shifting that thing like it had a lenco in it. I was talking about that car being a "bad"ride and someone in the crown told me that was Herb McCandless playing with one of his old prostockers. At the time I did not know who Herb McCandless was. I have since them become a fanatic of old school drag racing and cars and know who Herb McCandless is now.

Herb,

Check with HemiFred, StewartP and BigDad over on Moparts.com, they both have huge photo collections of the old cars.

Good Luck,
Bill Lamb

Herb, My name is Frank Hamer Jr, Your dad found me the Demon back in '99 in Texas and I unfortunately had to sell it in 2006. Not only is your dad a personal hero of mine but is the absolute nicest guy on the planet. I remember when he stopped at my house in Pleasant Valley New York back in 2000 on the way to Nova Scotia. After not seeing the car in 28 years he remembered absolutely everthing about it which I found perticularly amazing. While I had the car I found it super tough to find anything on it since your dad sold it in October of '72 when the rules changed, and the only article on the car was Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, Oct. 72 issue. I have a bunch of them and could you a couple. Back in 2002 I did the first York Reunion in Pennsylvania where I saw your dad as a memorabilia vendor. If my memory serves me there's a guy out in California who runs a photo/ T-shirt/memorbilia business by the name of Match Race Madness. I remember he had alot of photos of the Demon running at Tulsa at the P.R.O race where he lost to Grumpy Jenkins in the final. I mean these were professional grade 8 X 10 photos most likely for publication which included pics of your dad standing with the car. I know I also have 8 x10 pics of your dad with his 1965 Mr. 4 Speed Hemi Belvedere, 1 press B&W photo of The Demon on the bumper, and various National Drasters and Drag Reviews than have your dad and the Demon in it. I also have a pic I cut out of a magazine, I believe, Car Craft, that has a direct side shot of the wheelie shot from E- Town, with Jenkins in the background that was shot by Bob Mclurg. I also know that the Demon was on two videos. One was "Funny Car Summer" which was a documentary about Jim Dunn from 1972, I was able to buy it from Main Event Video in California. The other one was a video I believe that I believe was either called "Funny Car and Pro Stock Frenzy" or "Pro Stock and Funny Car Frenzy" I bought it from a smaller video business. I gotta dig them out. In Funny Car Summer he's driving the Demon in the Pre-Race parade and is kinda obscured by a Navy Float but the other video shows your dad backing from the burnout against Grumpy Jenkins and running him in the very last segment. Another guy you might want to get a hold of is Mike Goyda (www.goyda.com), he's located in Pennsylvania. He is the absolute biggest drag racing memorabilia guy on the planet, and a super nice guy to boot. A friend of mine was in Minnesota told me he saw your dad at the Hemi Reunion where Todd Werner unvailed the Demon restored beyond his back and that he had a tear in his eye, I know if I was there I would have too. I hope this helps you. Feel free to Private message me, email me at hemihammer@aol.com, or call me at home 845-635-3434. I will have to do some digging but I will find anything and everything I have about your dad and the demon. Please tell your dad I said hi and that I'm really glad to know the Demon is restored back to its former glory. Frank Hamer Jr

To say its restored back to 1972 status is an understatement. Its a work of art. My dads first comment after seeing the car at the All Hemi Renunion was, "its nicer than the day Gale and I finished it". The car is amazing and everytime I see it I just wish I could have been a few years older to see it back then. I feel the right person ended up with the car and in the next year this car will be displayed at different events. I will be contacing you this week and again thanks for preserving the car so the job could be done putting it back.

I met Herb Sr. at the 2006 Mopars at the Strip event in Vegas, and have his autograph on the S&M poster from it.
