I first met Steve at Columbus in the mid 1990’s. We got talking and realized that our northern California terminal was just 2 blocks from Rettig Bros., where he worked. When I was there, I would go by nights and weekends to see what he was up to. The conversation eventually rolled around to it would be nice to bring my car out there. I just thought it was a pipe-dream. Then one day, he calls me and says that Alan Freese is selling his car to someone in MD. If I brought my car to Maple Grove, Alan would haul it back to the west coast. Steve would get it to the races out there, and all I had to do was show up in the rental car. I ran three race that winter: the World Finals, the Winternational, and the Sacramento points race. Steve arranged it all.
