We had the same problem with an 2006 Traillazer SS. Ended up costing us a cam. lifters, and other stuff. There is a company called Improved Racing over in Jupiter Fla.,they make a oil pump pickup brace for $24.00, looks like a dist. hold down clamp for a small block Ford. It lets you use 2 bolts to hold the pickup to the oil pump, just like God and Melling had invisioned. This engine always had Royal Purple 5-30, Lucas syn. stabilizer and K&N filter. After another 80k miles it was still going strong. Just think of all the money people had to spend because g m didn't want to use 2 bolts. John Kissel

Probably saved GM 50 cents an engine to do it that way

Both of my neighbors had start lifter noise. Replaced lifters and fixed per dealership recommendation.

Yep, and who knows how many customers it cost them in the long run.
As a friend used to say, "More junk from the General".

Also check for coolant getting into the oil, from what I have seen not enough to show on the dipstick will show in top of the valve covers creates a sludge in the engine. GM had some porosity issues with some of there heads. Google for more info and how to identify head castings with issues. Something to look for.

There are different orings for use with GM or Melling pumps. When I installed a Melling 10295 on my 5.3 I learned you use a different colored oring for the two different pumps plus it depends on whether the pickup has a tapered end or straight. Red, green, blue and black. Good instructions came in the Melling box.

Bill that is excellent information and sometimes overlooked. If you Change the pump get it first then get the right o-ring. Have seen a repair that fixed the problem initially but it returned. Melling pump with o-ring that was ordered for the year of truck and engine application.
