Wink Re: Tear down at Gainsville?

After talking to Travis this weekend I know he for one would looooove to see more tear downs but the powers that be aren't feelin' it. When I was running the Caddy FWD Stockers we were torn down all the time. Three times one year by Travis alone! Jim

That was the norm then. Don't know when they stopped doing it but if you raced at Indy in the 70's you were torn down before the race. Every single car in competition went thru pre race teardown .

Now that they have cut back on the quota for the classes at the national events there is not as much money to employ enough trained tech personnel to handle a large amount of tear down. NHRA does have the protest clause in the rule book. If you think someone is not legal you can put up the cash to have them looked at. I really doubt that you would find very many flagrant cheaters out there. some minor infractions might be found but nothing that would be effecting the cars performance by huge amounts. I got torn down at the gators about 15 years ago after winning class. during the tear down they found my intake valve was .001 undersize due to the valve tuliping and bounced me. After I made the corrections and put new valves in the heads the car picked up almost a tenth. So not all infractions are performance enhancing.

Incredible amount of irony in Mike's first sentence.

I remember the first tear down at Moroso in 1983.
You had to get a local Caddy Technician to help tear down the car.

When I first started in SS every divisional 2 to 3 lucky souls were summoned to tear down. Should still be that way now. The suits in California killed that because they have no idea what stock and super stock are about. Everyone should have their gaskets ready and prepared to be torn down when they enter the gates. Hell, they used to at least seal the carb to intake and intake to head but that don’t even do that anymore. Zip zero nada.........sure miss Wesley.....

No, I remember a corporate guy that used show up at a lot of the national events and hang out taking picture but no techs. At that time we knew more about the new Caddy’s then they did! Right Yac! Jim

Yes. When I got that car it was an auto. That as in '89. Campaigned the car as an '88, which it was. The green car (stick) Mike drove a few times, I drove a few times and then you set the record in that car, not the blue one. I drove the Eldo a couple of times but ran the Blue car for 18 years. Set the IHRA and NHRA records many, many times. 22 times at my last count Jim
