I could be wrong but I believe there is a splined slider sleeve that easily disconnects the drivetrain from the motor, that's how they tow 'em back to the pits as well.
It makes sense that while on the track they must wait for the Safety Saferie to uncouple a locked up situation. Confirmation would be appreciated.
