I worked in a GM Dealership Parts Dept. The parts book showed both in the diagrams. The louver difference was early and late production. I wish I still had my old parts book that I could scan. I think the change was in Mar of 68
And after I typed this I read the difference was Big Block vs Small Block Cars. But my parts book did not read that way. Last edited by Wayne W; 04-04-2017 at 11:06 PM. |

So, only way to get a 350 or 396 in 67 , is as an SS, right? Jim Hawkins would have to change the hood to run a 350..At least it used to be that way. Today, who knows?

f rom CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION august 1971 edition----group 8.000 hood panel---68 chevelle [exc ss] #3940657. ss #3940660 69 chevelle [exc 396] #3940631 396 #3940632. the difference between 68&69 hoods is the location of one of the hinge bolt holes. the 68&69 hood grilles are the same part#.in 68 the ss cars were a separate model #13827 sport cp #13867 conv. in 69 there was no separate model ss just a ss pkg line item option like ac auto trans. etc . as the above part #'s state was part of the 396 pkg added to the base malibu.the copo 427 option wasnt listed in the parts book but when we built one for a/s in 1974 we had to run the 396 hood. the67-69 camaro flat hood #3938617 is listed[exc.350-396] 67 camaro #3909158 w/350-396. 68-9 #3938619 350-396 exc spec ducted hood.hope this helps. this part # info isnt from some reprint book, but a real gm hand me down from crivelli in 1972

Does that mean the 1968 Hemi SS hoods are legal on the 1968 Darts and Barracudas? Do they have to be fiberglass, or can they be carbon fiber replicas? I think that would be nice to have with a 273 2bbl. That might motivate me to change from the 1966 Dart to a 1968.☺
