Lower class cars are way Cool! I remember the first time I saw Ellis Buth's Pinto SW at Indy, it was love at first sight. I remember first going to IHRA races with my brother in the early 80's. I loved seeing the Pintos, Vegas, Corvair, Old's 88, and inline six cylinders in Stock. I got a kick watching the long head starts. Three of the killers in IHRA stock back in the day were Ray Head's 60 Impala 283 2bbl, Randall Campbell's nova wagon with a inline six, and J.T. Allen's malibu with a 200 V6. Those three guys won more than their share of races.

I agree completely Billy! Just some people were saying stuff like "all the lower classes N to U" or "N to V" which I took to mean that's where the classes cut off in general.

In NHRA, W is not diverse really...the cars are unique but the engine is almost always the 2.3 (140 CI) FORD except for a couple of guys running the 2.0. I haven't checked the stats in a couple of years to see if those guys are still running the 2000 or not.

I've always wanted to build a "U" car because of the diversity and competitiveness of the class. Maybe one day!

I guess the joy of finding a combination which is overlooked by NHRA and fellow competitors can be rewarding. Just seems in some ways a different challenge than building the quickest (fill in name of car or motor)in a class where most are the same.
Billy my true reward in SS was running the same Camaro BBC in GT/AA as everyone else and winning CLASS, heads up , no Break out in affect. At that time the rectangular port 454 and the oval port 454 were very close in et, MPH and it took a combination of Engine, Trans, Chassis, and Driver to win class. Then diversity came into the class. Congrats to the tech manual guys who found the added motors to use and the rule change to allow BBC in a FWD car as a California racer hoped so the low hp motors could enter the class.
Now many combinations are "competitive". Some are also ran. Luckily most of the "olde guys" had moved on, retired or just stopped racing.

I couldn't agree more with you Dick. Winning a heads-up run or winning class absolutely pegs my personal satisfaction meter! BUT, I have also found a great amount of satisfaction in building something that no-one else could get to run or building a totally new combo that's never been tried. I also get satisfaction out of going rounds in the the eliminator. I should also mention that I'm painfully cheap! And there's a lot of satisfaction to be had there too!
I guess that personal satisfaction is where each individual finds it.
