So you actually towed with the 1500 5.7? How much would you say you were towing? |

I tow my Hemi NSS Dodge all over the place with an 05 Durango 5.7 Hemi, and it's great. Although I use an open trailer and the total car and trailer is somewhere around 5500 lbs.
But, it has power to just sail up these mountains in Western Pa., I can top them at 75 mph, easy. It also gets terrific gas mileage with the MDS, over 18mpg pulling the trailer. A friend of mine pulls an NSS 62 Plymouth in an enclosed with a similar setup, and has close to the same results. Can't beat it. |

I had an 03 Ram 2500 Hemi that towed a 26' enclosed trailer with a 3000lb car with no problem. Only thing i didn't like is the transmission hunting gears. Got a Cummins after that would never go back to a gas engine towing again.

Anyone have the new 1500 diesel? Close to the same specs as the 5.7.
I have towed with 4 2500 Cummins diesels and 2 1500 5.7's. Set the cruise and never shift with diesels, The down shifting with hemis can be bothersome, but they will pull. Fuel mileage is not as good with 5,7's as the diesels when pulling. All were 4wd. I had a 98, 02, 05 and a 12 diesel. My hemis were an 11 and now a 14. Best truck was the 05 2500 Cummins diesel. 22 mpg empty, 17 pulling. If I could do it over, I would still have the 05. Best all around of the bunch! #5457 Curt Rees

Curt, I am testing one right now. So far getting 20 mpg in town. Haven't had it on the road yet. Really good driveability. A little different than the Hemi. A little less torque, but seems to carry it further. I have towed a 20 ft boat with a t-top. That pulled well. The one I have is a 4 X 4 Crew. We have never tested one for any time because they all sold. We got some more orders this year.

Bought a 2003 Dodge 3/4 ton, 5.7 Hemi with a 4.10 gear. With a camper and 24 foot Gold Rush trailer it works pretty well. The car is 3500 plus all the tools. Gets 8-9 mpg. I like it.

One combo that has really been good down here is the new 6.4 truck motor for the 2500/3500. It's the SRT motor with a cam change for big torque. I will look up the specs and compare the two. The market it seems to hit is the former diesel owner because the diesel just stays higher than pump gas. Got the Apache heads, got the small domed pistons with valve reliefs, 10.9 compression (I think the car motor has that) and the dual range intake. The results have been great so far. $1200 option vs diesel. Just new technology.
