UNION GROVE, Wis. - Nostalgia Super Stock Inc. opened its 2014 season at Great Lakes Dragaway during the Memorial Day Classic, which went on only after an outstanding clean up effort by track staff following flooding from eight inches of rain earlier in the week.

The entire pit area had been underwater, including up to two feet deep in some of the support buildings. The staff had to remove mud, restore electrical service and make the facility functional in five working days.

Highlight heads-up matches of the weekend included:

Gerry Gostenik from Dearborn MI in a 1961 Chevy Belair bubble top 409, running 10.690 at 125.36 mph and winning on a holeshot over Bob Cattelino from Jefferson WI in the ‘Faded Memories’ 1963 Chevrolet Belair 409 who posted10.689 at 123.52 mph.

Dale Chenoweth from Morton IL with a 1964 Plymouth Max Wedge 426 ran 9.85 at 133.86 mph but lost on a holeshot to Pete Stamm of Waukesha,WI*in his 1963 Pontiac Lemans at 9.889 at 135.17 mph.

Two long-time rivals, Doug Henderson of Columbia MO in his ‘Never Too Late’ 1964 Plymouth Max Wedge and John Rousett in his ‘Hard Days Night’ 1963 Plymouth Max Wedge went at each other all weekend, with Henderson finally prevailing 10.118 at 131.40 won over Rousset’s 10.187 at 130.51 mph.

In addition, the record book was being re-written.

John Grinwald of Watertown WI in his ‘Grin Reaper’ 1964 Ford Thunderbolt 427 FE went 8.645 at 159.20 mph to win over Bill White’s Demotte IN based ‘We Haul’ 1965 Chevelle Z16, which clocked 8.681 at 155.09 mph.

Grinwald’s 159.20 mph is the fastest all-time speed known to be recorded during NSS competition and came despite some wheel spin that caused a 60-foot time of 1.39 seconds.

On Saturday, Mike Singleton in his 1963 Dodge Hemi carved out a new NSS Inc.*elapsed time record with an 8.580 at 154.79 mph. But the mark would last just 24 hours.

On Sunday, Paul Habura of Addison, IL in his ‘Keeping The Faith’ 1963 Plymouth Max Wedge, an original aluminum factory car,*ran a blistering 8.554 at 156.95 mph blast to set a new standard.

Within an hour, Habura, who has clocked an 8.48 during testing, had backed up his record run with a 8.571 at 156.60 mph pass.

The average all-runs ET for the 16-car field was 9.79, just missing an 9.72 average set by the club at GLD in 2013.

The show was enjoyed by a full-capacity grandstand (approximately 10,000) crowd on Saturday and up to 75 percent capacity on Sunday.
