Default IHRA pure stock

Who would one contact at the IHRA to have tech questions answered about pure stock?

Questions like what's legal and what is not ?

How to go about getting replacement pistons on the legal list as there is no current legal piston for my combo?

Try calling Mike Baker at IHRA HQ. Wait until Monday or Tuesday, he's probably in Rockingham this weekend. 419-660-4206

I might be of some help since I wrote the rules many years ago. I don't think much has changed since then. If not Mike Baker or Jim Woods can help. Both are good guys.

Unless there has been a change any fuel line size is OK. Normal automotive shocks (90/10, 50/50,) No coil over unless they are factory equip. on some newer cars When I wrote the rules no back cut on the valves.unless factory such as SD 455 Pont. and late model Corvettes. I think thy might be allowed now as most are using them on late model cars. Better check with Mike Baker on that. Stainless steel valves OK. OEM water pumps. Alum only if factory equip. They can be modified internally. Cool can OK. Most older pre 1971 Jr. stock rules apply.

I would imagine at a swap meet or maybe someone has one for loan? Its obsolete and over 40 years old. 1971 was the last of the 7 inch wide tire days. Maybe a 1985 version would be eaiser to find? That was the last year that cams had to check on factory spec. and spring pressures had to be factory.

Tear downs were fun. Red Anderson made some very slick tools for checking cams, etc.
Great guy. I still miss him. R.I.P.

I still have some of the slick tools Red made. The really trick piece is the 2 ring degree wheel to check overlap and duration. Sadly they just collect dust in my tools box. Red was a great guy and very smart.

Pure Stock is what Stock was before the Unlimited Springs, unlimited cam duration and Mandatory high test fuel and roll bars. From1974 to around 1990.

The IHRA Rules book is very well written. Read carefully.
Most of the rules are simple bolt-ons.
Tires, shocks, traction bars, headers with mufflers.
The three key areas are good set of gears, good converter w/ beefed tranny, blueprinted cam with stock springs.

I like John at Bullet Cams.
He will build you a cam that will pass and send the right springs.
Suggest if you have the engine rebuilt go to a master engine builder who knows the stocker rules. Cost will be near identical to a normal rebuild from a normal engine builder. The advantage is knowing that the block and heads are spot on.

The suggestion to call Mike Baker is also a good start to confirm what is a proper fit for your car.
