I've heard of that as well. I guess the theory is that you are trying to simulate real world conditions where you get only one shot at it. I think this method should be used as only part of your training regiment.

I think hitting the tree numerous times over and over again helps with muscle memory and gives you that second nature feel for it so that you don't have to thing about it. Also doing it over and over again can help you find areas that make you inconsistent.
