Ok at some point I want to get another truck(waiting on lottery lol). I'm a Chevy guy so that's what it will be. My question is you can get the truck in the dually version or standard single tires on the rear. Right now I have a 24' enclosed trailer. At some point I would like to get a LQ trailer around 44'. Would the single setup work for this or is it going to have to be the dually? Thanks. Ed

Ed,
When my 24' trailer was new we went and picked it up with my son's 3/4 ton PU which of course had single rear wheels. However it was a Cummins diesel with a trailer towing package so it was not a light duty truck. Even empty I find it more stable when towing with my dual wheel one ton. There is a little wiggle that is not there with the dual wheels. While the single wheel is probably more than adequate I do think the dual wheel is better. My $.02. Bill |

Ed, the "Big Dooley" as GM calls it tows far better, the bigger the trailer, the bigger the difference.
Kevin has a crew cab 4x4 2500HD with the 8.1 and the Allison. It does not get a bit better mileage than my crew cab 2WD 3500 "Big Dooley" with the 8.1 and the Allison, in fact, mine may do a little better.

To pull a gooseneck with LQ you will have to have a dually. The tongue weight of the trailer will be too heavy for just 2 tires. Get a duramax diesel you wont be sorry.

It will be the 6.6 duramax with the Allison for sure. Thanks for the input. For now my 200,000 mile 2001 1500HD will have to get me to Columbus. ☺

Anybody ever notice all the 15K pound plus fifth wheels and toy haulers being pulled by 2500 trucks? Any of those look like they were not overloaded and outmatched? Didn't think so...my 3500 Dually pulled a very large fifth wheel so well that I can't imagine losing the peace of mind it gave. Did some dang big grades out west and don't believe anybody that says interstates can't have more than a 6% grade.

Ed,
If you are planning on a LQ trailer. Dually. Otherwise it would be alot of white knuckle drives. Depending on the size of LQ vs garage length with the water and holding tanks. These do place a lot of weight on the bed of the truck, and tires. Good luck Sean

Factory tires and suspension matter a lot too. My 2004 Ram diesel 2500 towed my 3800 lb. empty, about 8000 lb. loaded 24' box trailer fine. My 2013 Ram 3500 SRW does even better with the 7000 lb. rear axle and 3640 lb. rated 275-70-18 tires.
