In the early 80's they were moved into Modified. After the demise of Modified eliminator, they were then absorbed into the Super Stock ranks. The cars themselves can be built very close to the early Pro-Stock rules, with complete tube chassis, fiberglass fenders, doors, hood, deck lid, lexan glass, etc.

As far as where the class started and where it went throughout the years I'm not sure of as I was just a kid in that era. But yes, the cars can be built as you described. However, mine isn't one of those cars. Imagine how it'd run if it were.
