We parted out a '78 Grand Marquis back in the early 90s, I told dad to hang on to the motor until we could determine if it was worth anything, found out it was a junk combo for GT classes, so we threw it all away. Heard the heads were "unworkable" and shortblock assy was way too heavy. Even the local marina saw no boat anchor value in them. Please tell me they're still not worth anything.

The 78 is rated @ 320 & has a full point less compression. I would favor the 74. Again, Vic is probably the only one actually building one of these boats. I think what started this thread was the recent HP adjustments from NHRA, They dropped 10 off the 77/78 in stock AND the GT version of the motor. Somebody is running one in SS/GT. ?????

Ford 460 197-202 330 320 77-78 SS/GT

This thread changed my mind about having my tired 74 hauled off.

It's all relative, I suppose. A few years before that, I drove a 66 Catalina with just a 389 2 bbl. if power braked as you describe, it (and many similar cars) would smoke the tires until they blew up. The first round of smog motored (such as that Marquis) cars were terrible.

Ya know, seeing as you brought it up, I can't figure out just what to call the LTD. I've pretty well narrowed it down to two choices, "Great White"(it's white) or "Moby, Vic".
