Terry, You and I opened the book to the same page. Great idea having a rule on the open and closed pressures and taking the max published OEM spring as the bar. When you posted the LOL, I knew we were thinking the same thing.

That's good ideal,Terry although that would almost double my spring pressure
I figured your LOL comment was either you was wound up and just said forget it and put LOL.but it appeard you were in thinking mode and went well.,I expected to hear from you sooner though,LOL I can check durations, and @ times have thought maybe I just easier to give up on racing and try to get tech job,but I know specs just are'nt available for later stuff, which I figured was anything after 86. I came up w/spring spec solution and Jim Woods was interested in getting it,was SBI catalog it has spring pressure specs for practically anything, and is probraly pretty accurate, every spec I have ever compared, between it and the AERA prosis program match, for those who don't know that is Automotive engine rebuilders association, prosis is program they sell that has engine specs, casting#,bulletins, etc. for practically any engine ever made, some I never heard of or seen, but no it does'nt have duration specs before anyone ask. 150/350 sounds good to me but a guy w/69 440-6pack might disagree,as I would be almost doubling my spring and he would be the same as he was. I believe Terry's ideal is good150/350 is about right elimnates advantage of high dollar lifters etc, would. keep pure stock as pure as possible, due to basically a lack of information, and they call this the information age, kinda ironic,LOL As far as pure stockers go I probaly have the most checked car,has been through teardown 5 times since 99, was checked by Mike Baker/Duane Eiskant 1st then by Bill Felker/Hank Blankenship, then by Hank and Jim Woods and by Jim twice. duration never was checked, beside when I did it when I put cam in,the springs were checked when spring tester was in trailer, there was specs for my cam to check it. Hey Terry, just thought of something think same guy who has overdue book could have spring tester also.LOL Mike Taylor 3601 Last edited by Mike Taylor 3601; 12-20-2013 at 07:26 AM. Reason: addition |

Well guys....its up to you and Mike Baker. I just threw out a suggestion that was the only thing I came up with to control the use of expensive and exotic parts that would have to be used if unlimited spring pressures were used. I have done cyl. heads for race cars, and street rides since 1969. the 150/350 is really about all the flat tappet cams can stand with OEM type lifters. They can stand more but wont last long on the street or continued use. The OEM roller cam guys can use more but why not make it the same for everyone. I dont think the 440 six pack guys would complain as a true 440 with non ported heads/heavy OEM rods/heavy pistons/etc. dosent like a lot of RPM anyway. The pressures I suggested are 30 lbs heavier on open pressure for the 6 pack anyway and open pressure is more important than the closed pressure if the closed pressure is enough to close the valve. I used to use 110 closed and 280 open on a bracket motor (350 Chevy) and it would buzz to 7200 RPM easy with a fairly stout cam in it. My old 68 Z-28 would turn 7400 RPM with a stock OEM cam nd only 84 lbs on the seat and 206 open. If anyone has any other ideas Im sure Mike Baker will listen. Maybe a name change for the catagory would help some of the critisim of the catagory as they havent be "Pure" for a very long time.
I like Jr. stock but I like it because of that was a FUN time in drag racing for me. Best of luck. Last edited by X-TECH MAN; 12-20-2013 at 11:01 AM. |

I would suggest something more moderate like 130lb Seat to keep the ET difference from Stock a bit wider.

P.S. I just noticed the 1963 Max Wedge Dodge and Plymouth has 142 lbs on the seat for a factory spec. so 130 Lbs max might affect or might not affect some of these cars if anyone is running one. I think Phil Baldiccno (sp?) is still running his 1963 Max Wedge in A/PS? Last edited by X-TECH MAN; 12-20-2013 at 12:05 PM. |
