If it's the original engine he'd be doing himself or his heirs a favor by keeping it and any/all pulleys, brackets, dist-starter-alt and etc......

THAT was a real find!! That engine only came in the big cars, and the Chevelles. It has larger chambers than the early 250 horse, but has the benefit of the quadrajet. Pistons are the same from '62-69, but the later motor has a different cam, .390" intake, .410" exhaust lift. The '68 was the first of the large journal 327's, block should end with casting #660. Cylinder heads are 3917290, intake is a 3917803, carb is a 7028212. The Impala style oil pan is a stair stepped affair with three levels, the center level is to clear the tie rods and drag link. The Chevelle pan is a two level affair. The only difference between a 327/250 and a 275-300 later engine is the heads- the 275 has 3917462 casting heads. The difference in compression ratio is over 11 cc's between the two. A 68 Chevelle K or L car with the 250 horse can get into the high 11's on a real good day, the 275 horse in I or J can get 11.70's. Not a real fast combo, but reliable and fun.

Greg,
Indeed it was a real find. I run the 327-250hp combination in my O-P/SA '68 Caprice so I'm always on the prowl looking for these parts. The Caprice of course came with the 3 speed whereas all the other small block cars (including the Impala I think) came with the PG. Of course the NHRA changed the trans rule a year ago or so. Oh well! lol. I have a few sets of virgin 462 heads and have thought about trying the 275hp combo and moving up to L/M but then I have to put a roll bar in the car...so I'm going to stick with the 250hp for now.
