Default Orlando Street Racing Accident

Street Racing Accident

Posted: Aug 19, 2012 3:29 PM EDTUpdated: Aug 19, 2012 3:30 PM EDTBy Ray Raimundi, Reporter - bio

(Orlando, FL - WOFL, Fox 35) - A wild accident on an Orlando International Airport property has left two people in critical condition and injured several others after a street racing incident early Sunday morning.
The horrifying accident happened along Heinztlemen Blvd and Wetherbee Streets at around 3am. Orlando Police say more than 50 spectators had gathered to watch a street race between two vehicles along a 5-mile stretch of straight-roadway along the southeastern section of the airport. Traffic Homicide Detectives say one car - driving at speeds over 100 miles per hour - erratically crashed into two vehicles and then careened into a crowd of spectators towards the end of the street racing finish-line.
Orlando Police say more than half a dozen spectators were injured and two victims had to be airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Investigators say this stretch of roadway is prone to street racing. Jean Sanchez was one of the almost three dozen spectators who witnessed the massive collision.
"The car was coming down super fast and it hit some other car coming down the street. It hit like seven people. People were laying on the floor," says Sanchez.
Police say both the spectators and drivers could face criminal charges. Orlando Police say they will consider placing surveillance cameras along the roadway to deter street racers from gathering and using the roadway.

The above story was on the TV first thing this am.. The only difference was they said "Drag Racing Accident"... Not trying to Toot My Own Horn" but I wrote to them and explained the difference between Illegal Street racing and Drag Racing... I was very suprised to see the revised story on their web site....

The Orlando paper ran the same story and I e-mailed the author and explained my point of view.. Three hours later I got a reply from him and he thanked me for my interest in ths story and he said he didn't realize the difference... He re-wrote his story also..... This does prove that all we need to do is explain our point of view and at least some of them will listen to reason.... We all do need to stick toghether for our sport......

It's ironic that this happens within days of CFRC's dragstrip operation being closed down by either the Orlando city council or the Orange county commissioners, I wasn't real clear on which branch oversees that area and made the decission. Atleast with CFRC, they had a controlled environment and a facility that catered to the street racing crowd of today.

Hey Dan Moore, you're #1.

RIP Mark Graham & WB Hutto

Coupled with the fact our race will probably be the last at Orlando

I have wrote and called the local papers and tv stations in the Houston area about the difference of drag racing and illegal street racing. Guess they got the message.

The problem is most of the media thinks any speed contest on the street is Drag Racing.
4 or 5 ricers decide to race on an interstate and weave through traffic at high speeds. It's more like road racing. But they call it drag racing.
