Can someone explain to me how alternates work?
If someone can't make the call for first round, instead of bye runs, they pull cars sequentially from the non-qualifiers? For instance I saw Mike Iacono didn't make the call but his opponent raced an alternate in the first round of stock. |

alternates get inserted into spots that a no show is and in this case at Indy there was not enough alternates to put in, thats why there was so many bye runs

Ok, but how do they know who to insert? Do all racers just head up to the lanes when Stock or SS is called and hope to get inserted? Must take a while to pair I would think. That is cool though, I guess I could have actually qualified!

They said on the audiocast this morning that 8 hemi cars reported as "broke" for first round! Not real racers I guess - only there for the shootout.?

Yes , like Bryan said if you didn't make the field in qualifying you can just go up & sit at the back of the lanes & they will fill in the no shows with the next available qualifier. I got in the field that way back in 1998. That year I was in the field at #124 after qualifying then was bumped out by single car class winners, ended up as first alternate after a few were kicked out in teardowns & made it in the show when Howard Thompson was a no show Sunday morning. The sad thing is that this year (for the first time I can remember at least) there were not even enough cars to fill all the alternate spots. How much longer before they dont even have 128 cars entered?
