I am torn about what to do. I built a new combo over the winter, it's a 496 BBC w/1.80 glide 4.33 gear in a 3400lb 10" tire car. The thing made good power on the dyno, peak tq was 704 at 5700 rpm and peak hp was 864 at 7000. My converter is a 9" and I have always wondered if I should be running an 8. It is NA. The thing flashed at 5000 last year behind a much "tamer" combo with more conservative heads and cam. This one is going 4800-5100 behind the new engine. Obviously it is a little lazy.out of the hole (okay a lot lazy) so I definitely have to do something. Should I go with a new 8" deal or stick with the 9" and have it reworked?

I always say loose is consistent! Even if it cost you some E.T.
with your small tire it could present a problem unless you got your car working right. 5100 is too tight I would say 5800 to 6000 we have ran 8" and 9" I would say stick with the 9" since you already have it, send it over to BTE talk to Bryan they will treat you right. |

needs an 8" 6000 stall converter and not just any converter, an ATI 8" Treemaster.
Call ATI , speak to Charlie Plott and order it. You'll be glad you did after reading your 1st time slip with it installed. |

I would recommend an 8" convertor, about 5500rpm - 5800rpm. You will get a much harder hit with the 8" than the 9"...that's been my experience. I had a 496, now have a 572...had the 8" behind both and the 9" behind both. With the 8 inch I carry twice as much in the throttle stop as I do with the 9"because it is quicker in the first few hundred feet ....also, the wheels are up a foot with the 8" and only about 4" with the nine inch.
Just my experience....as far as convertors go...everyone has a preference. My 8 inch is a TCI and the 9" is a Coan....the combo is more important than the make....most preferences are due to people getting the right or wrong convertor to begin with.....Hughes makes a great convertor too, just a little pricey. Good luck! Ron 396V S/C

the last four converters I bought were from Lennie at Ultimate Converters. Good service, good parts, completely satisfied. He is a sponsor of this forum, his contact info is at the top of this page.

I won a $895 gift certificate towards the purchase of a torque converter of your choice from ATI. The gift certificate was won at the Spring Fling and is good until 5-22-12. I am selling it for $700 which would save you $195 towards the purchase of the ATI converter of your choice. Let me know.
