Default Re: Stocker to superstocker

Hi Roger
Back in the late 70s and early 80s I ran a 69 AMX in NHRA Super Stock with a 390 engine. Not wanting to move the rear springs or alter the wheel tubs the only tire that would fit was a 9 in tire. I have thought about geting another AMX but I would not want to alter the rear of the car. What if any thing could be done to use a bigger tire with the stock length rear end and no alteration to the spring location and the wheel tubs?
Thanks Allen

The biggest you will get and still have the slick inside the quarters is a 9x30. There's no getting around having to do some serious trimming of the wheel well arch for a 30" slick. Otherwise you need a shorter slick like a 28" but that is a compromise in itself. But I was still going 1.38 60' in my car with a 9x29.5 in my '70 AMX. I had another with an 11.5x29.5 with stock framerails and coil-overs but it was tubbed. You could do it by using a tub or mini-tub.
