Ron, the name of Hazelhurst was "Little Dixie Drag Strip" and the track NW of Jackson on Route 49 was "Jackson Sports Arena".
Ed, I've raced at Clarksville and have done quite well there. Anybody who has ever been there will never forget the "Loser's Bracket" which got bigger every round! Bear in mind there was another Clarksville track, (quarter-mile), only eight miles west of the current track, too. |

I honestly thought Jeff Foster and Bob Brockemeyer would be in the "200 Club" by now. The only guys I know who've legitimately achieved that mark, (and whom I've verified), are Garlits, Ivo, Al Hanna and myself. I'm at 276 tracks right now but I'm sure there are a few more folks over two hundred and it wouldn't surpise me to see a few with higher counts than me.
Ron, the last time I was Hazelhurst, I got chased off by your buddy's cows! The track at Pearl is still somewhat intact and The Sports Arena dragstrip is now the main road into a subdivision. |

If I counted right I think it was 36 tracks + 2 in Canada.

My experience at Dauphin Island was made much more enjoyable by the track owner, FasCat. I had arrived in the pouring rain and there was nobody on the property so, being an inquisitive trespasser, I decided to drive in and check out the track. Unfortunately, I got stuck in a sand/mud bog down near the finish line and sank 'er up to the hubs. I got out, walked in the rain back to the Dauphin Island Parkway and was greeted by a gentleman on tractor headed right for me. I flagged him down but he had already witnessed my stupidity and, with a laugh, came over to pull me out! It turned out he was the owner and he was a genuininely good guy.
I actually left the track and headed south down the Parkway to the Island and grabbed a motel room and enjoyed a few days on the beach. The track has just recently become a subdivision and Dauphin Island itself has been split by multiple hurricanes. |
