It' s BS that the rest of us have to play by the rules and they have Danny guarding their back with the WEST COAST RULE BOOK every time they turn around. Better yet, we are building a car to run under the same scoop rule. I'm now going to build it like Defranks and see if I get thru tech. And the first SOB that tells me it's not legal I'm going to show him that picture with the two rivets holding that thing on and ask why mines not legal!!! Sorry I'm tired of the damn Rules that are different from one spot to another.

Yes yes it was a bold statement that was to be taken with a grain of salt! I guess you have to know my personality better to understand the things I say, or write for that matter. (But I'd def take that car you're still offering). I just gotta save up 20 grand to pay the interest back. Come on Brian not even top 10 material?? I'lI have you know I won a small money bracket race once (and that was on 6 consecutive red lights)
I didn't think my ridiculous statement was as bold (and ridiculous) as an insanely illegal hood scoop on the cover of the national dragster at the biggest race of the year where tear down is common practice! Quote:

Bobby Fazio, Jimmy DeFrank has been running that hood scope for at least a year, with and without the bag. Had it on his car last year at Noble Ok. points meet. Tom

I agree the whole hood scoop thing on Defrank's car is a little ridiculous. I know that he isnt the only one who is doing that. They could at least paint it and try to hid it a little bit because that thing just looks stupid. We actually had a conversation about it in the lanes at Indy. I personally don't think it is right but I don't think that Jimmy is winning any races with it. He could just put the car in modified and other than the index he would still be the same driver and it would still be the same car. I understand that this is Super Stock and we still have rules to abide by but he never tried to hide anything (obvious as the nose on your face) and with a couple of hundred dollars in fibraglass work we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Hey Jamie who is Danny? I'm guessing a tech guy or NHRA higher-up?
Brian, I agree an illegal hood scoop doesn't help you become a better driver in a bracket race but it sure wouldn't hurt in a heads up race or when you are trying to qualify in a tough indy field, no? People could make a thousand excuses as to how illegal parts don't make you a better driver. I mean, a nice big-block crate motor in my car wouldn't help me be a better racer but it sure would make for a less expensive and longer lasting experience with much less maintenance as I wouldn't have to buzz it as high and check valves every few runs. But that is why they have Pro and Super eliminator. Go put that snout on a bracket car. The whole point of class racing is the rules! That's what makes it interesting.. well that and big wheel stands of course. Quote:

I think that is the reason for the snout. The top of the opening of the hood scoop can only be five inches from the surface of the hood in SS/AS, SS/BS, etc. I believe when Jimmy first built that car, it was for SS/CM, where there are no rules about scoop height. I believe a Comp racer was DQ'd once for too tall of a scoop on a Super Modified car. I agree, Jimmy's hood scoop looks...odd. Alan Reinhart made the comment on the Audiocast online that it "looks like an ant-eater". But, it passes tech, so I guess NHRA deemed it legal as part of the scoop, (under the rule of "as part of the hood").

The "Private Ryan" car had the same type of scoop modification at Indy ,although a little better craftsmanship was apparent. It's probably just something to draw your attention from something really questionable. LOL I can't imagine that nobody using a scoop, and/or scoop manufactures has never tested the air off the nose.
