I'm not saying there doesn't need to be some sort of rules of conduct regarding this, as I've personally witnessed some really stupid things, oil being dumped on ground, tanks being drained on ground, just alot of thoughtless acts. We really try to leave our pit area looking as if no one had parked there, no trash on ground, hopefully no oil spills however sometimes accidents do happen of course we do all we can to clean up. It's really just common sense and good manners in my opinion our sport has the potential for all sorts of environmental mini disasters. I believe most racers would feel bad enough about making a mess without being fined as most take alot of pride in their rigs, race cars personal apperance. Again I just question how NHRA retains the right to levy environmental fines. This makes no sense to me. Joe

NHRA/track owns the property. It is their house, it is their rules, they can do whatever they want. Just remember, they are the ones that will get fined by the EPA. They are responsible, for what happens on their property.

So using that logic.... say you drive over to my house, you engine kicks a rod out dumping oil and you don't clean it up according to EPA standards..So I fine you $1000 right? Hey I'm the property owner. Yeah sounds silly doesn't it? Joe

Joe, I agree with your logic 100% and let's take it one step further. Legally NHRA should only be able to place a fine on a racer for a violation on property that they OWN (Indy, Columbus, Gainesville and Atlanta). At other tracks it would be between the racer, the track owner and the EPA.

Hey Dan Moore, you're #1.

RIP Mark Graham

What about the fines for oil downs by the pro cars?
Legally NHRA can do almost anything it darn well pleases. You agree to that when you join NHRA and/or enter an event. Didn't you read the rule book or the entry forms?
It's called CYOA.

Disclaimer: I'm not a laywer, so>

In a sense that is correct. In that situation, if I didn't do a proper cleanup, you could take me to civil court an sue me for the cleanup costs, because the EPA would hold you responsible.

I watched the training video, it took about 15 minutes. Mostly common sense issues, which unfortunately some guys don't seem to have or care. I was at a Div. 3 race last year at Stanton, Mich. and I suspected that my pit neighbor dumped his tank in his RV early in the morning. I didn't see him do it, but I know is that all of the sudden it smelled like *&%$ and I did see dripping coming from the outlet. I asked him, "did you just dump your tank?" He told me no, and said that I was just smelling the local farm fields. It just happened to smell like *&%$ right next to my pit spot, which was directly next to his drain. Proves that some guys never learn or care.

You guys can bicker all you want but here's the bottom line:

NHRA penalty: $1000

EPA penalty: Felony conviction

Which would you rather have again?

Good point.

Funny thing is people DONT care, I do. We have Well and Septic...this stuff all goes round cycle.

I cleaned out my Garage and Basement about 10 years ago (maybe 14) The house was my Granparents, and well nothing needed moved, I wanted to get rid of "nasties" I came up with about 10 gallons DDT, about another 20 of each malathion and parithion, as well as probably 50 gallons other solvents and such that have been long since banned for over counter sale (carbon tet, etc)

I called the FD as they have a "Pickup" I was told its only once a year.....Id have to hang on to it till then. I said "Thats alright Ill just dump it in the leech bed" They said YOU CANT DO THAT !!!! (I wasnt serious sheesh) and my Smart *** answer to their once yearly pickup was "Sure , Ive got 16 acres here noone will see"

Less than 7 minutes later as I was moving it all back into the Garage to "Wait" for their time of the year, a FD truck and Hazmat truck showed up to pick it up. I think they expected to see me dumping it.....lol....

But I got it outta there.....

They were flustered until they figured out I wasnt really serious about dumping it. Then the guy gave me a wink and said, I guess you figured out how to get door to door service
