Low gear in the 3-teen range. Ditch the T-10 for a Jerico or similar. Proper race clutch and flywheel assembly. In that order...

skj283 you say RPM like it's a bad thing.

Rod,
It sounds like you have too much clutch or like Bub said may need heavier flywheel or both
You mentioned not wanting to crank 8000 I don't know anything about your engine or RPM
range but however many RPM you have you need to use pretty much all of them on launch
Air tires up some get some spin see what happens.
