DC & OldSkool - On another tack....I’m making up a list of cars that were seen for the first time in 69 in SS.
Basically any new models, or existing models with new for 69 engines. So far I have the L72 and ZL1 Camaros, the Hurst AMC AMX ...can you think of any others? |

(For 68 only the Mustang had those, Fairlanes were all auto flat hood) 69 GTO Ra4 69 Nova 350/LM1. The LM1 350/255hp was factored to 270hp almost right away & still kept winning. It showed up &won in the Camaro, Nova, Chevelle, Camaro Ragtop, even the big car. It was kind of the new "283". This is the same engine you'd see for the next 30 years in auto parts store lobbies as a "new GM Goodwrench 350 for $1195" or whatever. It's just basically a 350/300hp with lower compression. Some of the Hemi cars got ram air for 1969 which I think was new vs 68. Factor didnt change AFAIK which is a little strange. NHRA didnt totally know how to handle factoring yet for combos that had EITHER flat hood or cold air. Sometimes cold air got factored higher, sometimes not. |

But I don't know of a single car that ran SS, in '69. John Angeles had a '69 SS Bird that is said to have been the 1st Pontiac 400 powered reg SS Pontiac to break into the 9's, back in 2000. John's daughter Keri was driving it. But I doubt John was racing it in '69, especially not in SS. Would probably have had to be a Pontiac dealer sponsored car. There were some dealers racing Stockers back then. But I don't know of any who raced a new '69 Pontiac, in '69, in SS. I have pics of 2 possibilities. But, I don't know what year they began racing in SS. One had "Strong" on the door & was marked SS/F. The other was Phil Monteith's '69 RAIV "Hatari" Bird, marked SS/FA. I've seem it marked with a stock class designation. So, I don't know that he ran SS, in '69. Am posting a pic of the "Chief Justice" SS/G '69 Judge. It's a small tire Super Stocker. But again, don't know when it began racing SS. The "Packin Poncho" was a '69 RAIV SS Judge. I think it ran in AHRA & IHRA events, mostly, since it had an aftermarket hoop scoop. We saw it run back in around '75 or '76 in Amarillo, @ the World Nationals. In this pic, it was running SS3/GA An aticle on FB says this: "... This is the famous race car of Royce Fowlers - the Packin Poncho. This is 1 of 549 Ram Air IV with a manual transmission. It was originally commissioned in 1969 to be a super stock race car and only has 5124 miles clocked on the odometer..." https://www.facebook.com/krybabyperf...4468627055298/ http://www.oneownercollectorcar.com/...o-royce-fowler Last edited by oldskool; 09-30-2021 at 01:24 AM. |

Thanks both for your help.
DC - I posted an abbreviated version if your STOCK list (no weight break info, no engine data) on a Group on FB - A couple of guys added their 2c - these were guys who raced back then - Tom Myl and Tommy Laird.....so took it at face value and changed it. Callahan Iaconio Rowe (350/255hp Nova) Another guy posted what he claimed were the correct cars for a couple - I don’t know how he knows......he’s a dislikeable bloke...but I put his opinion in brackets at the end - be interested to know what you guys think? 69 NATIONALS Top Stock Class Winners A/S - P Scalia - 69 Camaro - 11.81 @ 116.73. Good finds!
Between Zuckerberg & Branson my FB account is broken, trying to get back over there but FB has no customer service whatsoever. H/S Iaconio, not sure how I got 210, 150 looks right from the pic. I/S I'd already found the Rowe Nova, not the best fit but there it is. P/S Boyce shows a picture of Beckett / Beckerts car, a wagon. E/SA Callahan, Fury has to be a 62, no 63 Fury fits class. F/SA Simon - both Boyce and the Drag News narrative I have say 67 Ford, but the 68 or 69 W31 F-85 is a good fit too. The name Dick Simon doesnt ring a bell with the Ford folks so that one's still open. N/SA Ripes - Drag News says 67 Camaro but a 327/210hp-2v fits, pretty rare to see a 2bbl. Boyce says he ran Barkley's old car which was not a sedan deliv. But a Sedan Deliv makes sense, though Ripes was a powerglide converter pioneer so unusual for him to run a hydramatic which was trendy in the sedan delivery until they got banned for 1970. Getting pretty close on this sheet, less vague than many of them! |

You're not asking the right Ford people if they don't know who Dick Simon is.

Well thanks for that! Sounds like 67 Ford is right then. See the pg4 tables I did - my best guess there is a Fairlane 390gt/320hp. 2-door sedan, W/P=10.22. Any recollection of what cars Dick Simon ran? |
