This is a good idea but I seriously doubt the NHRA would accept an underfactored GM product as long as Ford is the 'official' car. A supercharged 572 with .800" lift rated @ 220 hp is nice to think about though.

GM finally gets knocked off of it's riding high in the saddle and preferential treatment and all of a sudden the sky is falling. The Bowtie gang, and the Fire Chicken supporters closed their ears when criticism was directed towards the NHRA over the bogus HP factors given to the LT1's and the combined GM's EFI combo's with Stock. This can of worms wasn't just recently opened with the Ford Mod Motors, or the Cobra Jet cars.
I look at it this way, GM took the bailout money after all those years of giving away millions of dollars, and they are still in the ***** house financially. Ford chose not to take a dime of Oblama's money, and is now stronger than ever financially; and with Brian Wolfe again involved with Ford Racing, Ford is now back in Pro Stock, Nitro F/C, Super Stock/ Stock, and other sportsman classes. For those who are making this a Ford/GM argument, Isn't this really what this is REALLY about ??? GM has taken a big ***** and it just digs in your krawl !!!I Guess you all could reach out to Oblama and have him get Eric Holder or one of his cronies involved from the Justice Department, and have them run the NHRA as well ![]() |

The 275 HP for my Firebird was dead honest. The problem is that the HP numbers in the book are factors not HP numbers.

The cylinder head work they can hide in the aluminium LT1 heads is a big factor there. Hang one out of the GM crate, or out of a car, on an engine dyno, they won't make anywhere near their stock hp factor. Thatr's the big reason the S & SS factors are so different. The SS heads aren't all that much better than a good set of Stock Eliminator heads. Put a set of actual stock castings on a good running LT1 Stocker and see how fast it is now.

Every body is bitichn about the Ported Ford Heads for Stock on this 5.0 235 hp combo! Does anybody understand it has been legal for the Chevys, if anybody choses to run the Z06 427 it has been in Comp Guide since 2006 Not sure if NHRA even knows that the heads are CNC Ported from the Factory!!!!!! BTW with Titanium Rods and Intake Valves

Doesn't matter Ralph, the Z06 has an honest hp rating. Wouldn't be competitive with the new Ford & MOPAR stuff. I don't see how that matters anyway, as long as the hp rating is correct. Nothing else matters.

Take a step back for a second.
If you were going to build a car today, what would you look for? Two choices 1) Your favorite car. (ford/chev/dodge) 2) Low factor car of your brand. 3) Low factor car of any brand. Why do you run the car you do now? Bought it new in 72 or was the fathers or type of car you first got laid in.....etc..etc What if, all the manufacturers started filling the class guide with new cars, way underrated..what would happen? That's right, you'd see a lot more cars like the ones in your neighbourhood on the track. Easy to run the index by getting to minimum weight, gears,converter and slicks. Manufacturers get better exposure of their newer cars, sell more new parts from others who street drive the same vehicles, kinda like it was in the 60's eh? You decide if that's better or worse. One issue is all the old iron that is passed by or rendered obsolete. Maybe a 20yr cut off for the guide to keep the manufacturers happy and a "modified" class for over 20yo? Yes I know, your ready to firebomb me, but wait. If I was going to build a car today I would go for option 2 because option 1 is always stupid expensive and most of the time not competetive without real deep pockets. So, I go through the guide and find a 1962 widget that's 400 cubes and 122hp. GREAT! Now where the heck do I find a 62 400 widget? hmmmmm Ok, a 2009 widget with blower and 4valves with 122hp. GREAT! Now where do I find a 09 blown widget? In every freaking autotrader/buyerflyer/local paper. I'll pick that up tomorrow and order a converter/slicks and gears and run the index. Then, as I pick up I'll be factored accordingly. (and if I do a stocker build on it first, I'll be -.120 out of the box. That will be hit sooner) Not the perfect solution, I know. The thought of 68CJ's and Hemi's being relegated to a modified or nostalgia class is depressing. The upside is, there is still S/SS racing 5 years from now. AND, if done right, it would showcase CURRENT Stock vehicles at the dealership. |
