Tony Pizzi had a 427-425hp '69 Camaro in A/S in the 1970-71 time period. Very fast. SS&DI had an article on the car and he claimed some 10 sec times. Not sure he ever held the record though.

Dwight...the car you're mentioning was probably the Janetti-Wood car which ran out of
Tony's shop. Tony I believe, ran a white? '68 Z-28...about that time...in Stock....I think I saw it once....he had lettered on it "World's quickest Z-28" ...and it probably was.... Dwight/Mark...do you recall that for the 1971 season...NHRA changed the weight breaks in Stock Elim....I don't remember why...so that each car would run a class lower than the previous year...A/S would be B/S...B/S would be C/S...etc..(for 1971.) Want to mention Dave Lebrun here for a second...He was a fixture in A/SA for many years...as most will remember...but he did "row" a 4-speed for a few years prior... I saw an old photo of the familiar blue Camaro...and it had A/S on it...(probably from the '70 season.) He might have had the record for a bit that year. I saw the car run in '71 several times as a B/S...due to that NHRA mandate.... Mark....was that Mazzotta car a tri-power? MAURICE....sorry to go on an "East Coast" rant here....Would you mind sharing with us what you DO know about the "Fugitive" car? I'm interested....have you got any info recently? I've got a friend who's checking a "rag-tag" collection of Drag News' from about that time period...to see if the car is mentioned...Don't have any ND's....anybody???? |

Maurice...I agree that Jim Waldo might remember the car...also maybe some other
veteran Stock racer from that area...perhaps Cal Method...could help. Also...Danny Durham...who's on this site at times... he might have seen the car back in the day....You out there Dan? |

Dave won the 71 Grandnational in the Camaro , with Joe DeLorenzo driving the team's Chevelle to the runner up position.

SS…What I know is the car was a 1968 Dark Blue SS Camaro called "The Fugitive" 396-375 (possibly with aluminum heads) and 4 speed . It was based on the West Coast (B.C.) of Canada. Trying to find a trail of it's race heritage. I know it was raced in Division 6 and at the Winter Nationals as an"A" car 1969 and possibly went to "B" in 1970. I don't know how far East it was raced. Not 100% sure but Dwayne Deveral and Winton Cross (not sure of spelling on both) campaigned the car. I know this is all a long shot, but some of you guys can remember ET's and MPH and who ya'll raced decades ago. Thank you to all of you who are helping me piece this puzzle together. Maurice.

Have you tried asking Grant Eldridge? He ran an A/S Camaro back then.

I have a sheet from 1970
A/S was 11.45 Katic-Keenan-Smith '66 Corvette Atco I do recall the Mark Mazotta driven car and it was fast. Dave Lebrun also ran A/S with a Corvette and not sure if that was the same car. 11.40 was what I recall it ran at Island against us at one race. My partner fouled and both cars were .05 under the records on that run. That was in 1970 I believe

Yes it is still around, fully restored to original (396-375 aluminum head, Blue) rumoured to be in a museum. A friend in the movie industry made contact with one of the original owners on the "Godzilla" movie site. Also have found some race track pit photos and it did run "A/S" in 1969. I am still hunting for information. Hopefully I will run into Cal Method at Mission this weekend. Thank you…Maurice.
